It damn nearly was,  the soldiers that rescued him said "half his head was missing"  and he was in a coma for a full week, and oddly enough, emerged from it on the day the war ended,

Subbie has never met a Finn. I work for them. They're management style leaves a lot to be desired, but seriously, don't fark with a Finn.

Other fun things I've learned working for a Finnish company:
* What every one of my male coworkers looks like naked
* I have no hope of keeping up with them while drinking
* Finns will politely switch to English, even if you're the only non Finn in the room
* Good pay and great benefits because I'm a human being too. Just not as Finnishly awesome.

Highest confirmed direct-kill count of anyone ever.  A five-nothing Finn farmer who lived to be 97, and whose balls were so big they affected the tides when he went near the seashore. I literally cannot think of any single individual more legitimately badass than this man. There may have been more impressive single feats of badassery done, but no one has ever had a more impressive career as a badass, and the man did it all in less than 100 days. If you made a movie of Hayha's career, it would seem more over the top than the most outrageous Rambo movie while being completely truthful.

I work with a Finn (for for them). She is heavily armed, and my kind of woman. She doesn't depend on others for what Finns did themselves.

I once watched a drinking contest between a Finn and a Scot, both hardcore drinkers. They alternated between vodka and scotch, allegedly so neither would have the advantage of exclusively drinking their favorite drink, but they also threw in some beer and other stuff, I don't remember the whole list at this point. By the end of it just watching it was making my liver cry out for mercy. I don't know how they stayed conscious as long as they did. In the end the Finn won, barely. I think it was mainly due to bodymass though, the Finn was about 6 inches taller and probably had 20-30 pounds at least on the Scot. This was at a house party over New Year's about 10 years ago when I and all my friends were all younger, more adventurous and of course stupider.

Re: winter war. All of four months. Jebus.

It was pathetic. The only reason the Soviets "won" is the Finns ran out of bullets. A 10:1 kill ratio is something most armies can only dream of. IIRC, there was at least one battle where the kill ratio was something like 30:1, and some Finns had to leave the lines because they were having nervous breakdowns from killing so many defenseless Russian soldiers.

Hmm. I work with several Lithuanians, who sometimes apologise for chatting to each other in Lithuanian around me. It doesn't bother me, as they have to put up with dialectal Scots from most of us. I think people in general have a greater chance of understanding Lithuanian.

It was the first battle around the Mannerheim Line. The machine gunners had to be rotated.

So, can you perhaps tell me: Is the REAL reason anyone was afraid of the Red Army during the Cold War only because they would keep coming until you ran out of things to kill them with? Because my research seems to indicate that nobody who faced them in combat was inferior in any way but numerically. Even in the Battle of Berlin, I know the Wehrmacht had a 4:1 kill ratio, and that was when the German Army consisted of invalids, old men and schoolboys. Who were we so scared of?

We weren't afraid of troops.  We were afraid of bombs/bombers, missiles, nukes, and potatoes.
