Focus groups loved it.  Market research (oh and there was a lot of it, you betcha) showed that the prime demographics found it to be quite compelling and their eyes fixed on it for 3 seconds longer than other options.  Months of work and millions of dollars went into that logo, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Don't you dare minimize the true impact of the redesign!  People were literally blinded by all the white space and brightness!  The 'Music' tab was CONSOLIDATED into the entertainment tab!  Just think about that for a moment, if you can bring yourself to do so, it was worse than rape.

/really, it was a fun night

Well, the spacing of comments was different.  And the widow was centered, not pushed to the left.  These things required a revolt.

The background behind the text was a thick grey, instead of a white screen that is like reading off of a lightbulb.

Exactly.  Modern word processors can't use a white background, so neither can a comments page.  A frothing consternation of anger and rebellion was the only reasonable response.

And there were only a couple dozen greenlit threads per day total.  All the others stayed totalfark.  So a lighter (well most of the time) could depend that by the time a thread went green it had been thoroughly vetted.  Fark served as a one stop shop for news and entertainment for lighters and for $5/mo a sort of whacky surreal underbelly of the greenlit thread beast.  Now threads just get green with zero posts and there's very little reason the average lighter wonders "hmm I wonder what I'm missing" and worse yet has to weed through several dozen stories to get to anything of substance.

Most site redesigns don't matter too much.  They're still fairly intuitive.  Netflix, however, still has a completely retarded UI and design.  And it only exists so their one UI is compatible with the Wii and touch devices.

Instead of maintaining the old one for desktops and HTPCs, and then offering a new UI for touch devices, they nixed the old one and went with just the touch UI.

Fark has changed over the years, but I'm not sure if I'd call it better or worse.  I don't want to use the word "mainstream" or imply that it was "hip", but back then you could expect to see a lot more crassness.  The sponsors were just as important then as they are now, but they were smaller and much, much more tolerant of the rye theme.    As someone already mentioned, you'd find direct links to boobies and weeners on the main page, for instance.

The users were, by and large, a lot weirder, too.  There was a lot less outright trolling and a lot more comments from people who really were "out there".

I started lurking sometime around 2000.  Back then I never posted on any forum, ever.

God, I remember Fark back when we could post boobies without problems. Well except when a dense Farker would post a pic of his girlfriend; but that was more his problem.

One time a less than bright Farker posted a pic of his girlfriend topless, but with her face blurred out. Of course he had posted a non R-rated pic of her in another post. So apply a little Photoshopping skill, and Tada! no more blurred out pic!

Lets not even discuss home school girl, rainbow bright sister, or the jail bait threads that would now get you charged with kiddie porn just for reading them.

UseUrHeadFred: The users were, by and large, a lot weirder, too. There was a lot less outright trolling and a lot more comments from people who really were "out there".

People had a lot more "theme" accounts back then. Accounts that would always post in a certain style or recant a mono-dimensional joke, like Meow Said The Dog. I remember there was one guy, every one of his posts was a short anecdote that started off with "You know what would be really ironic?...." which is a funny gag if done consistently.

You still see some people like that from time to time. Pocket Ninja, Stop Arresting Me and Mike_Lowell are probably some of the more famous ones. MaxxLarge still delivers the limericks from time to time.

Yeah, I wouldn't say Fark's been ruined or has gotten worse. If it was I wouldn't be here anymore. But it's certainly different. And yeah, a lot more mainstream.

Back in the beginning Fark was a news aggregator that had awesome photoshop contests intermixed with porn.
Then the camouflaged sponsored links started.

Even if it's true, it's bad customer relations.

IF? IF???!!?!??  Re-read this thread and say you doubt the existence again.  Only Fark is worthy of such a nonsensical thing as thousands of voices crying out on the internet in muted rage over the change of font and background color.

It was too bright. And scary.

Yeah nothing against the photoshoppers today but it seemed like the old contests were so much better. There were fewer of them and everyone went into those threads because there was just so much good stuff. I don't know what changed it. You could blame cliches but those were always around.

BigBooper: God, I remember Fark back when we could post boobies without problems.

If you want a taste go to Foobies.com It's not nearly what was...but at least you see boobies. of course NSFW!

Then there was the guy...can't quite remember his handle...who posted links to a site with TONS of pics of his soon-to-be-wife in various stages of undressedness. He shared the login info with farkers, who were checking her out daily. Trouble was, he also used that site to host all of his regular family pictures and, inevitably, the streams crossed and his fiance got wind of what he was doing...he posted a mea culpa, and AFAIK patched things up but, talk about awkward.

I always felt bad for Jeff for that. He was such a big part of Fark for, well, pretty much since the beginning. Then with one poorly thought out comment ruined his place. From what Drew said in response to the outrage Jeff's time out sounded temporary but I haven't seen him post since.

Yeah, but then after he said that, the whole community collectively swarmed on him, and TF memberships were getting cancelled, and did he offer any remorse, or apologize for being snarky, hours after the shiatstorm he created?

JEFF: Remember the last 3 times the design changed and everyone moved to Canada and never came back to Fark? Yeah, thought so.

Yeah..Not so much.

As a designer and developer I totally "get" Jeff's irritation, but the real reason his response was so stupid is because the redesign genuinely was terrible.  I also get that Fark considers itself outside the mainstream, but that doesn't mean it can't look nice, be funky, AND make money.  In its current form it is very hard on the eyes.

I do not remember what Facebook looked like when it started, just that you had to be a student at a college that Facebook recognized to join. At first I hated the inane repetitive "Duke sucks" type of humor, and I've always hated the racism, sexism and other forms of prejudice. But it's a place to hang out, like some dive bar that I can't seem to stay away from. Good for some laughs and chuckles. You young'uns just don't appreciate what you've got.

picturescrazy: I always felt bad for Jeff [...] I haven't seen him post since.

I was one of the TF cancellers, but I renewed it again after about a year, and kept it for some years. I often have wondered if Jeff is really still around all this time, posting under an alt .... quietly shaking his fist at this little community, wishing he could post, but knowing that people would pile on him like a ... well, a guy who gets piled on. Now that I think of it, maybe he had to agree never to post here again, as part of his split from admin duties. Who knows. I was kinda impressed that he had the nuts to tell off a horde of angry Farkers. But we're all hiding behind keyboards, so courage is a little exaggerated.

Man, I haven't thought about Gorgor in a while.  I'm sure he's doing fine and about 3-5 on good behavior.

What era was that? My memory is not so good.
I'm guessing '04 - '06 but could be out by a few years either way quite easily.

He was still kicking around occassionally in 2010...I remember because I saw some of his...unique posts during downtime while I was deployed.

I started coming around here regularly in 2007 as a decoy for staying employed (with my boss's covert blessing), and I seriously thought one thread he posted in was going to get me fired if IT ever got around to viewing my history. However, the fact that Fark wasn't blocked when things like Gmail were, was kind of an indication that the IT guys were in on it too. Didn't stay at the company long enough to find out long term if that was true though.

serves him right for openly being a christian.

*looks closer* That's an ankh! Well... serves him right for wearing pewter-plated brass ankh on a shoestring, and sporting a middleshed, like it's the 90's. Geh-hey.

I could never get into FARK on the PC, because OMG so many tiny links! But then I started using it on mobilw devices and it's the perfect size for absorbing a few funny headlines at a time.

Slashdot, OTOH, has been notorious for having several incredibly terrible mobile interfaces to their site. The best was Avantslash, but it was third party and broke every time /. changed something.

Someone from FARK go tell /. how to build a usable mobile site, please! Actually I'm finding myself pointing to m.fark.com as one of the few examples of a fully-usable mobile adaptation with relatively few annoyances compared to all the other crap out there.

I'd been lurking since the fall of '02, made the account spring of '03. I also forgot about gorgor until just now (thanks, you jerks). The memories still make me shudder.

When "cliche" was more of a meme than "meme" was a cliché.
