markfara: I really don't get it. Is it, like, women are always b*tching about something, or something like that?

I'll be kind.  It was an epic thread announcing the re-design of Fark.  One of the key people running Fark at the time made a comment to the farkers "You'll get over it".  Never to be heard from again.

Even if it's true, it's bad customer relations.

Someone posted something regarding "2007" further back.  I don't know if that's right or not, but one thing is for sure, there isn't one day I open Fark up that day doesn't cross my mind.

So you didn't get over it then?  I do think the newer design is better functionally.  I also remember the first time I ever visited fark.  I had no idea what I was looking at.  The whole thing confused me.  But for some strange reason I kept coming back because a friend would send links to threads.  I don't know why I was so dumb but I just didn't get what Fark was.

Electromax: Now I wanna see what Fark looked like before this apparent meteoric redesign. GIS'ing it just gives me a very similar looking site with the tabs as different colors. Is that the one?

Back in my day Fark didn't even have Tabs. There was just Fark. You just scrolled through all the articles. There were boobies links right there on the main page. And the turtles, there were so many turtles

bim1154: I remember that day so well.  Fark was on fire!

That one and the original Ha Ha Guy thread I would say are the two threads that stick in my mind indelibly.  Ha Ha guy was like a revolution happening before my eyes.  Some kind of non-violent takeover.

And there were only a couple dozen greenlit threads per day total.  All the others stayed totalfark.  So a lighter (well most of the time) could depend that by the time a thread went green it had been thoroughly vetted.  Fark served as a one stop shop for news and entertainment for lighters and for $5/mo a sort of whacky surreal underbelly of the greenlit thread beast.  Now threads just get green with zero posts and there's very little reason the average lighter wonders "hmm I wonder what I'm missing" and worse yet has to weed through several dozen stories to get to anything of substance.

I still haven't gotten over the latest Deadspin redesign, which made the site very user unfriendly if you want to read the comments.

And I laugh everytime I see Reddit, who's webmasters haven't learned anything about webdesign past 2002.

I liked it when it was just weird, obscure and funny news. Fark was more about the humour and stupidity in news back then. Now it's whatever comes down the pop culture poop shoot that's already on a zillion other blogs and sites. Instead of being some offshoot thing, Fark is now just another purveyor of the internet culture zeitgeist.

It's fun to look at the Fark wayback and count the number of once-big, now dead websites. Oh, Ananova, if only you could have become a "featured partner" you might still be here today.

Most site redesigns don't matter too much.  They're still fairly intuitive.  Netflix, however, still has a completely retarded UI and design.  And it only exists so their one UI is compatible with the Wii and touch devices.

Instead of maintaining the old one for desktops and HTPCs, and then offering a new UI for touch devices, they nixed the old one and went with just the touch UI.

Fark has changed over the years, but I'm not sure if I'd call it better or worse.  I don't want to use the word "mainstream" or imply that it was "hip", but back then you could expect to see a lot more crassness.  The sponsors were just as important then as they are now, but they were smaller and much, much more tolerant of the rye theme.    As someone already mentioned, you'd find direct links to boobies and weeners on the main page, for instance.

The users were, by and large, a lot weirder, too.  There was a lot less outright trolling and a lot more comments from people who really were "out there".

I started lurking sometime around 2000.  Back then I never posted on any forum, ever.

Thanks for the links ya'll, I always forget how fun the wayback machine is.

Didn't spot many names I recognized on that 2003 comment thread though, unsurprisingly. I don't directly interact with any farkers on here but I generally recognize 2/3 of usernames in most comment threads. Probably 80% in sports threads. Just started using the favorite system to tag people for different things lately.

/only about 10% on the rare politics thread I slog into, probably a good thing

Pretty much every layout change Gawker Media has made over the past 2-3 years has only made it worse.  The site was so much more functional in 2009.

God, I remember Fark back when we could post boobies without problems. Well except when a dense Farker would post a pic of his girlfriend; but that was more his problem.

One time a less than bright Farker posted a pic of his girlfriend topless, but with her face blurred out. Of course he had posted a non R-rated pic of her in another post. So apply a little Photoshopping skill, and Tada! no more blurred out pic!

Lets not even discuss home school girl, rainbow bright sister, or the jail bait threads that would now get you charged with kiddie porn just for reading them.

If you want a taste go to Foobies.com It's not nearly what was...but at least you see boobies. of course NSFW!

People had a lot more "theme" accounts back then. Accounts that would always post in a certain style or recant a mono-dimensional joke, like Meow Said The Dog. I remember there was one guy, every one of his posts was a short anecdote that started off with "You know what would be really ironic?...." which is a funny gag if done consistently.

You still see some people like that from time to time. Pocket Ninja, Stop Arresting Me and Mike_Lowell are probably some of the more famous ones. MaxxLarge still delivers the limericks from time to time.

Yeah, I wouldn't say Fark's been ruined or has gotten worse. If it was I wouldn't be here anymore. But it's certainly different. And yeah, a lot more mainstream.

Back in the beginning Fark was a news aggregator that had awesome photoshop contests intermixed with porn.
Then the camouflaged sponsored links started.

Then there was the guy...can't quite remember his handle...who posted links to a site with TONS of pics of his soon-to-be-wife in various stages of undressedness. He shared the login info with farkers, who were checking her out daily. Trouble was, he also used that site to host all of his regular family pictures and, inevitably, the streams crossed and his fiance got wind of what he was doing...he posted a mea culpa, and AFAIK patched things up but, talk about awkward.

Yeah, but then after he said that, the whole community collectively swarmed on him, and TF memberships were getting cancelled, and did he offer any remorse, or apologize for being snarky, hours after the shiatstorm he created?

JEFF: Remember the last 3 times the design changed and everyone moved to Canada and never came back to Fark? Yeah, thought so.

Yeah..Not so much.
