The exocet joke holds no charm for you.

Worth noting Maggie only won that war because she threatened to Nuke Argentina...and meant it.    The Argentinians had french made  Exocet anti-ship missiles and would have made a hash out of the Royal Navy  but Tatcher  knew the French had built in diable codes into the missile to keep the countries they sold them to from using them against French forces.  After the Sheffeild was destroyed she demaned the codes, and the French nauturally refused,  not wanting to piss off a good customer.  Whereupon she apparently in dead earnest threatened to Nuke Argentina if france they didn't cough them up, so Mitterand complied

But, there's a reason to have the funeral...

It will be a pathetic attempt to revive the sad and faded glory of the rotting remains of a decades dead empire?

In honor of her policies and stand against socialism shouldn't her state funeral be privatized ?

WTF Indeed: Oh how far the mighty British Empire has fallen when it celebrates the taking back of strategic sheep grazing lands.

It's England.  For most of its history it was strategic sheep-grazing lands.

Why is the government pouring resources into this funeral? Why don't they privatize the affair? Hand it off to the best bid?

What a load of farking shiat.

The only reason Thatcher is not universally recognized as a war mongering despot is because she led a somewhat democratic somewhat representative Republic.

It was still better than the US plan. Give a third of the islands and waters back to Argentina, a third of the land and waters with all the oil would go to the US as a buffer region, and Britain keep the last third.

Maggie's Falklands War Theme

farm1.staticflickr.com
Sheep (Waters) 10:19
Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away;
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air.
You better watch out,
There may be dogs about
I've looked over Jordan, and I have seen
Things are not what they seem.
What do you get for pretending the danger's not real.
Meek and obedient you follow the leader
Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel.
What a surprise!
A look of terminal shock in your eyes.
Now things are really what they seem.
No, this is no bad dream.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.
He converteth me to lamb cutlets,
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger.
When cometh the day we lowly ones,
Through quiet reflection, and great dedication
Master the art of karate,
Lo, we shall rise up,
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water.
Bleating and babbling I fell on his neck with a scream.
Wave upon wave of demented avengers
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.
Have you heard the news?
The dogs are dead!
You better stay home
And do as you're told.
Get out of the road if you want to grow old.

They didn't know about those reserves in 1982, though. It was part international dispute over sovereignty, part falling in the opinion polls (the party in power gets to choose when they want to hold the next general election. As soon as it was clear public support was there again, twinned with the Labour Party picking a scarecrow as their new leader, the election was called for the spring of '83).

As someone pointed out in a previous thread, more British Falklands War veterans have committed suicide than were killed in the war.

How about at Thatcher's funeral they have a veteran commit suicide by jumping out of a light plane without a chute? Like Charles 'Nish' Bruce, an SAS hero of the Falklands and one of the world's top freefall experts, did just last week.

Amazing.  People generally live longer than 20 years.  They also have memories installed.  Politicians' and PMs' policies have impacts over many lives.  It's amazing.
