It's easy to roll our eyes and write this off as more backwardness from a country/region caught int he the 16th century, but it's starting to look like part of a trend worldwide .It seems like women's freedoms are being rolled back everywhere.  Not only are women in Libya, Iraq and Egypt far less free than they were five or ten years ago, but you have the Patriarch of what amounts to Russia's official state religion saying just yesterday that feminism was "dangerous" because it encouraged women to do something other than stay home and raise kids,  and even in the US red states are passing restrictions on things like abortion that are so punitive towards woment they would have been unthinkable a decade ago (tran-vaginal ultra-sounds anyone?) and it's becoming something close to an accepted notion in far right-wing poltical cirlces that women's sufferage was a mistake and the 19th amendment should be repealed (because women are creatures of their instincts and always vote for proponenets of "nanny-state" policies).  The backlash is real, and getting ugly

It is one thing to say Iwon't allow you to opress me, and I won't fear you and I can burn any symbol I want when you are hundreds of miles from where the lunatics who will kill you for that shiat are in power.  I think it is largely irresponsible and a meaningless gesture, but normally nto that dangerous to anyone.

Still, it's very important that we all respect peoples' choice of sky fairy and allow them to drag the rest of civilization back into the Dark Ages in the name of "religious freedom."  Because... otherwise, we get Stalin!

No, the headline's mine, and while it is a bit a run-on it still seem perfectly cromulent to me.   It could have perhaps done with  added commas after "Blogger" and "online"  thereby making the text in the middle a dependant clause.  However, I don't think it is that hard to parse as is.

Actually...if they just accepted the truth about themselves, they'd probably wouldn't be so angry all the time.

You spot the difference by looking at what their life situation is, not what they are wearing.

The bikini girl could easily be "property" of a pimp, and the burka girl married to a sweet guy who loves her and treats her like a queen.

Nice, twisting and turning to justify the indefenseable. A wise man once said "Tolerance of evil is a crime".

miniflea: Call me stupid, but while I don't necessarily disagree with them, I'm not sure what these protesters are trying to accomplish, or think they will accomplish.

Whatever some protestors' goals are they want their protests noticed and discussed. One sure fire method to get some media attention is to protest topless and get arrested.

Since FEMEN is a feminist organization they have come up with an ideology where appearing topless is pro feminist (plus it really provokes the fundamentalist religious types who are a major enemy oppressors of women). They are a bit less coherent about how toplessness combats the sex industry. Maybe something along the lines of preemption where they will show their tits before being forced to.

The downside of this strategy is that the opinions of women may start to only be taken seriously if they are attractive and have nice tits.

But then again Fox news with their blond bimbos already works under the assumption that looks rather than intelligence is more important for conveying trust in the information  they give. Fox, if it still exists in 20 years, will probably evolve toward topless anchor bimbos.

Joe Blowme: Wow, are you really this stupid? "Islam is bad BUT THE RIGHT WING IN THE US IS WORSE BECAUSE THEY WANT TO STOP BABIES BEING KILLED!!"

The differences are primarily in the amount of power they have. The Right Wing extremist Islamists have complete power in a number of countries, whereas the Right Wing extremist Christians in the US have pretty limited power here. If we gave the Right Wing extremists Christians in the US complete power, how long do you think it would be before:

1) Homosexuality was outlawed
2) Adultery was a crime
3) Cohabitation was illegal
4) Heresy was a crime
5) Abortion & Contraception were outlawed
6) Jews, Catholics, Muslims, Hindus were subject to restrictions on their ability to worship?

I'm not justifying anything. Especially not either of the indefensible things here:

- I'm not justifying laws requiring people to dress in a particular way in public. As far as I'm concerned you should be able to walk down the street naked if you want.

- I'm not justifying your assertion that you can make assumptions about people's lives based on their dress.

Tolerance of evil is aways a mistake. Intolerance of stuff you don't like is evil. Wisdom is knowing the difference between evil and stuff you just don't like.
