Provided I'm able to stay far enough away from Woody and his puddles, all this makes me more likely to visit Times Square. It sounds entertaining.

Problem is, when you regulate it, you're also implicitly saying it's okay. I'd rather we just get rid of them altogether.

Authorities need to stop this before the freaks get mixed up with the drug addicts. There's nothing worse than a furry with the syringe on top.

The fandom definition's pretty loose as it is. I'd imagine anything from baseball mascots to drawing Pokemon art would be considered "furry" in the right (wrong?) context.

I love how New Yorkers get butthurt about tourists.  If you spend all your time and money bragging about how awesome the place is, what do you expect?

I was grabbed and bear hugged by that same cookie monster just last month.  I wasn't sure if I should have paid him or charged him, so I just walked away.  As a NYer it's easy for me to walk away, a measly tourist wouldn't stand a chance.

Because Times Square has a reputation (outside New York) of being the heart of the city, the "downtown" of New York where it's like all of New York City summed up as one thing.  Of course, it earned that reputation decades ago, and everything that made it unique was exterminated to turn it into a gentrified homogenous pablum that is, as you said, like any mall on Earth.

Somehow though, the idea of fursuited/costumed grifters mugging people, urinating in doorways and groping women makes me smile, like the spirit of Times Square lives even though they cleaned it up on the surface.

Standing around in a creepy costume doesn't warrant a tip from passers-by.

Groping would get one of their plastic eyeballs rammed into a place that is very uncomfortable, regardless if the costume was anatomically correct or required an orifice be created for that specific purpose.

Well, if pressed, they are "Elmar" and "Dana the Adventurer" i'm sure, but i doubt the immigrant South Americans that are often the ones in these costumes care much about the royalty system or copyright infringement.

It's got to be a really shiatty way to make a living. I'm sure that if they had a better option, they'd take it. OTOH I guess most of them are homeless crazy people. Not exactly the best ambassadors for the city.

I work for one of the companies whose intellectual property is being used, unlicensed, on Times Square.  I'd also mention we are located right on Times Square itself.

I know this is a gathering concern for our bigwigs, as these costumes are essentially representing our brand(s).  Obviously they are not sanctioned, but there is awareness that some Cookie Monster feeling up some kid or some Spiderman punching out some old lady could lead to a lawsuit.  Even if not that, then just erosion in trust.  It takes a video or picture of that and...  y'know.

I expect a crackdown.  Last year there were a few of these guys, almost a handful.  Now they're everywhere.  The summer will be worse.
