They're quite open about it.

I may have mentioned this before in some of the Virginia stance on Gay Marriage threads but I plan on spending as much money as I can in the Maryland side and DC for my upcoming nuptials and to mail in an itemized receipt along with a letter to the Governor explaining why, as a Virginian, I would choose to take my wedding money to another economic area rather than keep it home.

This kind of story only makes the wait to mail that letter that much harder.

TFA is talking about taking funds legally restricted to campaign use and spending them on private expenses, which is a different thing and actually illegal.

He paid the deposit.  Donor paid for majority of the wedding (not against the law).  He got a refund for part of the deposit not used.  It all stinks, but it doesn't sound illegal to me.  Change the laws, even China doesn't allow gifts to immediate family members because it is the simplest way around corruption protections in place.

Maybe it was Friday when I heard that update. When you listen to NPR on your commute and through much of the weekend some stories tend to bleed together.

Jeez, his precious little crotch-fruit is apparently old enough to get married but isn't old enough or responsible enough to either A) pay for her own damn wedding; or B) participate effectively in a work-around of campaign finance and financial disclosure laws?  Come on, if he trusted her at all then the donor could have and should have just cut the check straight to the daughter.  Why is Bobby calling the shots and signing the contracts?

But in this case the gifts weren't reported as they were gifts made to McDonell's immediate family rather than himself. It's one of those kinds of situations that most ethics boards would be all over.

No one is really questioning the legality (although I certainly agree it stinks) - it's the idea that he didn't consider it necessary to disclose it that is the issue.  5 figure "gifts" from companies in legal conflict with the state would seem to rise to the level of a mandatory disclosure at a minimum.

Reached for comment, McDonnell released the statement, "So I hear Cuccinelli wants to outlaw blowjobs... whats up with that?"
