FTA:Broadcasting from the city that has no bones about asking eighth graders to come down to the facility and start making sandbags so the wealthy people don't have to pay for a dike.

Building Dike that money and foresight. Which I gather are in short supply generally.

Impeding floods?

  2013-04-10 08:33:52 AM
He's right. You don't have the right to "volunteer" a group of people en mass.

NewsBusters, for that tiny fist of impotent rage in all of us.

I feel dirty for saying this, but I kind of agree with the op-ed guy.

Accepting volunteers that happen to be eighth graders that come out on their own initiative and time?  Yeah, sure.  Actively drafting kids for manual labor from a public institution because you're too cheap to pay for it?  Significantly less than OK.

  2013-04-10 08:43:15 AM
is today the day that children are part of a community, or is it the day that they sole property of their parents?

It's called Corvée and is a form of unfree labor and has been used for centuries by governments to use citizens as resources.

Didn't Ed get the MSNBC Memo promoting the notion children don't belong to parents, they belong to the whole community??  Seems the whole community could use some help from their "property."

On a serious note, if the 8th graders are volunteering than it is not "slave labor" and I am fairly certain that if Fargo floods, it won't just be the "rich folks" who are affected by the rising water....  Now if Ed wants to beg the question "how many times does Fargo have to flood before they take more permanent action?"  I think that would be a reasonable question to ask.

I thought they were against dykes having kids?

Arkanaut,

I am fairly certain someone is going to call you a meanie, or some other bad name...

Well played, but some humorless Farker is going to get her flannel shirt and jorts in a wad over your comment.

And the leap to volunteer-built national infrastructure from the derp brigade commences in 3, 2, 1...

  2013-04-10 09:10:41 AM
Community involvement is bad. At least according to all the conservative butthurt about the last MSNBC promo. But Ed Schultz said something so lets get outraged about that too.

This gay Farkette thought it was worth a chuckle, actually. But I'm sure the aggrieved lesbians will be along shortly.

Zagloba,

Didn't realize you were the Politics thread bouncer.  I appreciate your suggestion, but upon reflection I believe I shall decline your generous offer and stay.

btw/ WTF is an "MRA?" and
what is a "Reddit?"

Tarl3k: Hate to say it, but he kind of has a point on this one...

No, no he doesn't.   He might have had a point, if Fargo didn't already have a system of levees, if they didn't already have a substantial public and privately-contracted workforce dedicated to building additional dikes as necessary, if they didn't have a $2 billion plan to expand that system substantially and if they hadn't recently raised taxes to help pay for the expansion.   But since all of those things are true, he's just an idiot.

WEll, I had to have X numbers of 'volunteer' hours to graduate highschool, if I remember right.

There was much "Wait, if I have to do it, HOW IS THIS VOLUNTEERING?"

If he somehow keeps .005tonsofderp or LawGED from posting in a thread, I think we should consider him tenured.

Mine just flat out called it 'Community Service'.

In practice, it was "Here's cheap slave labor for teachers who have pet projects."

Serious Post on Serious Thread: You sound...unshaved.

Full beard in fact. Could probably brew beer with all the yeast microcultures I carry.

  2013-04-10 09:41:54 AM
Volunteering requirements for graduation are bad. I'd like to see some consistency from Ed though. You want to force community involvement and then biatch when it's not done solely on things you want.

You might have a point there.

I can field those questions.

MRA stands for: "Mens Right Activist". Bunch of guys who can't get girlfriends, so they blame femenism on everything.

and Reddit is kinda like if fark and 4chan had a baby.

I, as libby liberal from liberal-stan, as a Ph.D. student seeking to become a college professor:

Farking hate Ed Schultz.

I love that they gave Chris Hayes his time slot. The Chris Hayes show has been fan-farking-tastic so far.

Thanks Codenamechaz,

Thanks for those answers.  I think you need to copyright the explanation of "Reddit" while I have never been to that site, your explanation paints a very vivid picture....

If it weren't for conservatives, I would have never heard of Ed Schultz.

Manfred J. Hattan: But since all of those things are true, he's just an idiot.

IMO he's just an idiot period. i tend to like MSNBC but that became used to when you have Chris, Al and Ed leading off your nighttime line up. "bloviate " wasn't made for them but they fit it and it's derivatives perfectly.

who the flying farking hell give tawana brawley's defender a job? oh yeah MSNBC but why? seriously why?

Schultz's point is valid. Suck it, NewsBusters.

But, I know, it's unpatriotic not to be a good serf and pick up the slack left by the rich.

jpo2269: On a serious note, if the 8th graders are volunteering than it is not "slave labor"

When I was in the eighth grade I got "volunteered" for all sorts of stuff.
It didn't actually hurt me, but in my juvenile mind it certainly did count as "slave labor".   :)

Mr. Insightful,

LOL, I can certainly relate.

  2013-04-10 02:23:22 PM
Oh how I love to see every farking spring when out come the 'Temporary' sand bag dikes.

/Surely the millions spent each spring could be spent once instead of every farking year.

//Theres a new dike management system that has come out. Making the land owner abutting the dike pay for its maintenance and upgrades. Usually used on a small scale where the government made dike breaks the land owner now has a meandering river on his property and his house barely habitable, unless he has a boat to get to it. And under madeup law, without him bribing the local guvment or paying the full dike cost, he can't put the river back cause its natural for a river to meander.

So were they really volunteers? Or is North Dakota trying out a test version of Obama's obligatory National Service?
