Why is the cartoonist "inept"? I don't get this. Does TFA of TFA not get the cartoon? The "one job" is obviously aimed at the individual that didn't do their part to keep the building from burning down, a single failure can cause that whole system not to work is what they're saying.


Now, there's a site on the web dedicated to just this one concept. And, naturally, it's mislabeled. Called HadOneJob.com (because the site YouHadOneJob.com is Common Soon?)

When we put our house up for sale at the end of the year, our realtor pointed out that the Couty Assessor's Office had my name wrong.  All title work was correct, so all I had to do was go to the office "in person" and submit a correction form.
Unfortunately I live in another state.  When there I noticed they had my first name wrong, my last name wrong and my wife's last name wrong.  Batting .250... and this somebody had ONE job!

The problem with the You Had One Job meme is that it is interpreted as You Had One Task. The people that make these mistakes may just have one job, but it is filled with so many tasks they can not spend too much of their time on one in particular, which leads to these mistakes. They are not always caused by inept employees but rather number-crunching managers looking to cut costs in any way they can in order to increase their own bonuses.

The first picture in the thread is a great example. A McDonald's restaurant isn't going to have an employee that just puts meat on burgers as their one job. They will also have to cook the meat, put the sandwich together, drop chicken in the fryer, watch the time on how long the patties are good (or useable), prepare for rush times at lunch and/or dinner, etc. Putting both patties together on a Big Mac is a simple mistake that is easily fixed (or staged for a photo).

About 8 months ago we had a person whose job for the day was to stamp mail. All she had to do was put envelopes on the machine hit start and put the output in a mail bin. Simple huh? Well like all tasks we assigned this person she found a way to screw it up. She ran 200 envelopes through the machine with $14.65 postage.........ON EACH ONE!! After she discovered it she just let it go because she thought she would be in it deep. She would have gotten away with it if she just sent it off to the post office but she sent it to where our mail gets presorted and they found it. She proceeded to blame the machine and say that it must have changed the postage itself. God I wish we would stop hiring our clients idiot relatives.

What kind of Big Macs do they have where you live?  Fried chicken even?  There's many things wrong with that Big Mac, but fried chicken ain't one of them.

I don't know how you interpreted my post like to get to that conclusion, that wasn't my argument at all. I was simply pointing out that person did not have just one thing they had to do. In no way did I compare a simple mistake in making a samdwich to surgery or operating aircraft.

Doctors are actually not a good comparison, because it's one of the only professions where we accept a comparatively ludicrous human error rate.

My argument is that when somebody (fast food employee, factory worker, whatever) does a task hundreds of times a day, fouling it up once in a while is forgivable, and (assuming it's fixed) hardly worth a second thought, let along internet ridicule.

I've never flipped burgers, myself, but if I had had "complication" rates like those doctors, with 20-40% of my pizza deliveries, I would have been shiatcanned the first week. In the same vein, UPS and FedEx deliver, like 99.95% of their deliveries just fine, but don't let that stop you from raging about the one they lost. For your convenience.

I get that there are people who are super-type-A: they can't bring themselves to accept the 99% score and grab a beer. But I don't recall Steve Jobs wasting time taking pictures of his Big Mac to post on Instagram, either.

bopis: Let's all try to remember, that the person who maybe made your hamburger wrong, doesn't really give a shiat that you are crying about it on the internet.

not only do they not care... but there is a high likelihood that the person that took your order sent it back there, in some cases, in a completely jacked up and stupid way... and that they dont care either. 

come to think of it, i cant remember the last time i was in a fast food joint & the person either taking my order or actually making it even had a remote semblance of a look of caring, let alone competency.
