That's called a win-win call, since Houston wants wins and Phoenix is tanking, so they want losses.

For someone who is tall enough to have been playing at or above the rim level since he was probably 12, I can't conceive of how he doesn't understand the basics of what is and is not goal-tending.

The best part is the hands-up look of disbelief like he didn't do anything when there's literally a dozen cameras from every angle trained on the basket. I pick my nose at a stoplight and it's on YouTube in five minutes - you ain't getting away with that one.

Jermaine O'Neal is still playing basketball? Or standing upright?

Forgive my ignorance, but how is this goaltending?  There's a shot, hits the rim, bounces up, hits the rim again, then the ball is swatted away.  From what I can tell, the ball hits the rim and is headed away from the basket right before it is swatted away.

Or is it because he touched the net?

The ball is still above the cylinder. In international rules, you can block the ball off the rim, but in the NBA, it's not legal.

/though I'm pretty sure it's illegal even in international rules to block a shot out of the rim from inside of the rim, which is what O'Neal did.

Ah ok!  I missed that the first time around - I thought the ball was below the rim when he touched it.  A re-watch confirms that he is indeed, a dumbass.

Thanks for the info!

In fairness, as I mentioned earlier, Phoenix has been tanking for about a month now, so the organization, at least, is happy with his failure.

By giving the win to Houston instead of allowing Phoenix a chance in overtime, they gain a little edge over the Lakers in attempt to cover up the obvious conspiracy to give zombie Jerry Buss a ring.  Wake up, sheepfarkers!
