J. Frank Parnell: Fair_Poopsmith: Wall_of_Doodoo: Fark.... Really? What's a 'reddit'?

A magical place where trolls are shut down before they kill politics threads.

Politics threads deserve to be killed. And all they're really doing is 'shutting down' those with minority opinions, which upset the established teams who make up the majority. Protecting the status quo was never so cool.

A magical place where trolls rational people are shut down by ron paulians before they kill correct politics threads.

FTFY

Whoa, really?  I largely bailed out of here during the last election cycle when politics threads were ended before they even had a chance to begin (by the same dozen or so people every time) and found myself really pleased with the amount of actual discussion going on over there.  Aside from the Ron Paul threads, I don't know that I've seen much support for him over there.

Discussion on reddit? You mean the place with groupthink and upvoting system that forces unpopular or differing thoughts are pushed down into oblivion.

I read reddit for awhile, it got boring hearing the same thing over and over again because the same ideas are constantly upvoted and the differing views are always voted down.

My co-worker has been editting down his reddit bookmarks due to the amount of not only repeated ideas pushed over and over again, but the fact that what happens is not really discussion, it is more like a backslapping contest.

As opposed to here, where Phil Herup some other troll of the month comes in and shiats all over the conversation, derailing everything by repeating the same nonsense and then refusing to back it up, and the entire thing just becomes a ragefest where everyone throws up their hands and gives up on discussing the actual topic?  I dunno, I'd rather hear some good ideas talked to death, and it's not uncommon that ideas from all over the spectrum get upvoted due to the fact that they aren't just people being disingenuous for attention.  As for the ideas that are pushed down into oblivion... well, a lot of them really deserve to be.

You know there is an ignore button. You can even color code people so you know if you need to skip a post. The upvoting system makes reddit end up reading like a hive mind. Popular people are up voted, unpopular ones are down voted. Ideas should not be heard only because you think they need to be heard. That narrowminded one-sided view is exactly why I prefer it here. I am not about having my reading sorted by a bunch of college kids, deciding what they think is the best idea. I want to read differing ideas and make up my own mind.

As for not attention whoring, are you reading the thread. It is about someone doing just that on reddit. Also, didn't reddit just get done with a some pedo-teacher snapping shots of girls in school and posting them?

Sounds like a great site, but just ask redditors they will tell you how much more awesome they are. Kinda like you are doing right now.

Yeah, it sure would be awful to shut down a minority opinion that lends itself to discussion and is so well thought out as this  http://www.fark.com/comments/7690404/83509669#c83509669

So reddit users are cool with censoring those ideas that they disagree with. Many that is some 1st amendment freedoms right there. This is the place that supposedly has a hardon for Ron Paul. Ron Paul is the father of the dissenting view, but you couldn't tell that by reading reddit.

Let the fools open their mouths and show themselves to be fools, is a better way to deal with it. Instead reddit takes the bury your head in the sad approach.

I'm talking about politics threads specifically, not Reddit in general.  Yes, attention whoring looms large.  But man.  As someone who Farked more than a few hours a day from September 2001 and TFing about half as long, there really is more quality discussion happening in those threads than in our Politics threads for the past 4 years.  It took me a bit of convincing, but it's nice not to have to constantly roll my eyes at people who get off on throwing discussions off track.

If you go out to dinner with your friends, and eventually crowd out the guy saying racist shiat, you're not censoring him.  Somebody's words being deemed ridiculous or unhelpful isn't the same as someone being silenced.

not necessarily. I had a neighbor back in the day and his younger brother bragged now and again about how he used to be a hardcore meth addict. He used to say he would have to do an Incredibly high dose to get to bed. If what he said was true, I can understand what lie-bear said. Mind you, it's only because of this story that I would believe or know this.

So stick to the topics and use the ignore function. They are there so you don't have to roll your eyes.

I personally would rather know what kind of crazy there is out there, instead of reading the same Ron Paul is god thread over and over again.

Quality discussion is differing views being aired and discussed. At reddit this doesn't happen. Unpopular view points are voted down. The reason you probably found it more agreeable is because the reddit political threads tend to lean your political way. That would be my guess then.

Perhaps you should just realize that morons post shiat on the net, and ignore is a great function.

I feel like using an ignore function is far more akin to censorship than to have to scroll down to see what most people considered poor discussion.  I've never felt like people shouldn't be expressing contrary ideas, it's just offensive when it steamrolls in over something that's an on-topic discussion taking place.  I think you're confusing the people I'm talking about with "people I don't agree with."  I'm not talking about a guy who keeps posting screeds wholeheartedly defending his ridiculous opinion, I'm talking about people who get off on simply ruining shiat.

But, are differing views necessarily rediculous?

Maybe I'm reading too much into this; but, I think the point is; shouting down a view because you don't like it doesn't make that view rediculous.

The reason the ignore function is superior is that you alone can decide what you read and not read. On reddit you have to scroll down to see what differing views are. On fark, I see them right in the order they were posted. Also, it gets rid of that person from your list on any thread you read, so ignore is superior in that it only affect you.

This whole idea that people need to be downvoted because you don't like what they say is exactly why I don't frequent reddit. I just don't like others deciding what I should read and in what order.

As for censorship, having to scroll down sometimes numerous pages effect everyone in the thread, ignore only effects you.

I really enjoy certain corners of the reddit community.  If you are on reddit and aren't subscribed to r/askscience, you are missing out big time.  The sports communities like nfl and cfb are a little less appreciative of unadulterated snark, but they're also less trolly.  Gaming people should keep an eye on rpg and boardgames, because you see some really neat ideas.  Some political subreddits can sustain an informed conversation, because the voting system largely works to marginalize the crazies.

But regarding the crazies. In the wider spectrum of reddit, there are some creeps and some shiatbirds.  SRS is tainted by people who either don't get the joke or take it too far, and they've done a lot of damage to the concept of "hey, let's not tolerate people saying really vile things".  The men's rights' community is part of that backlash, but they don't do much more than incessantly whine and bark at the moon.  For the people responding to the RON PAUL comments upthread, yes, the Paulistas were a problem during the election cycle.  A bunch of 17-year-old libertarian wannabes had downvote bots that went after people who made negative comments about Paul or Libertarians in a couple of the political threads.  I think they finally banned those twerps and then after the election they gave up on their quest.

The one thing that disappoints me is the white supremacy community on reddit.  Keep in mind, anyone can create a subreddit.  I have one for my local rpg group and my Minecraft server.  People can create all sorts of weird shiat (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT GO TO R/SPACEDICKS), and that means that the knuckle-draggers who think white people are getting a raw deal will occasionally crawl out of their little self-created hole and post in general threads - then it looks a little more like a Fark Politics Tab thread.

And Reddit seems to be 95% picture memes and very little other content.

It's far more than that. The problem is that the first thing people see are the default subreddits, most of which are a cesspoll of stupidity, along with a long list of bad shiat. I don't doubt that a lot of people see that and run away. But there are also a lot of great, topic specific subreddits, which are mostly free from the asshattery that pervades the more heavily trafficked subreddits. And don't get me wrong, there are a lot of assholes on Reddit who spew some of the most vile stuff anyone is likely to read on the internet. But a lot of that can be avoided, if desired. I spend almost all of my time in my specific subscribed subreddits.

Aside from the assholes, the biggest issue with Reddit is the voting system. It is almost impossible to have a contrary or unpopular opinion. People will just down vote it to hell and once it goes lower than the threshold, it sort of disappears.

It's like I told my sweet cancer baby, who's only got two weeks live unless we can come up with $500,000 for her life saving surgery and treatments, you really cannot believe a word anybody from the Internet types.  Being such a sweet angel as she is, Dahko'ta just doesn't understand why anybody would lie, like all those people that claimed they donated money for the $500,000 in surgery and treatments but never actually donated a dime.  Because of the lies, I don't believe she'll get the $500,000 in cancer surgery and treatments that she needs to live, but on the flip side, it means she also doesn't believe the doctors when they tell her she needs $500,000 in surgery and treatments to cure her cancer so that she won't die in two weeks, likely before her 8th birthday.

UNC_Samurai: and that means that the knuckle-draggers who think white people are getting a raw deal will occasionally crawl out of their little self-created hole and post in general threads - then it looks a little more like a Fark Politics Tab thread.

Man I hate white people.
