Dune, Halo, and a few others. I'm in.

Just watched it again, the special effects in this are mind blowing.

Yeah, that's going to be a release day viewing.

Also:

Nice call.

Nadie_AZ: Dune, Halo, and a few others. I'm in.

That's what I thought. That very first shot of Elysium and I said "wow, that looks like a Halo." If Blomkamp can't make the Halo movie, he'll damn sure include references to it.

Blomkamp has done no wrong so far, so this will be a Day 1 for sure.

/Please let it be rated R

I like how the slums of earth resemble those in District 9.

2013-04-09 10:13:17 PM
Looks cool. Can't wait for all of the modifications to inevitably fail Damon and watch him use some good ole humanity for the final resolution.

Popcorn Johnny: I like how the slums of earth resemble those in District 9.

And how both are actual slums in South Africa.

I have a feeling this is going to be as full of plot holes and logical inconsistencies as Independence Day.  I also have a feeling it'll be just as much fun to watch.

MATT DAMON!
/but yes, I'll see this opening day

2013-04-10 02:36:50 AM
Looking forward to it, but totally can't relate to the story in the trailer.

(pulls it up on my phone)  I didn't recognize Jodi Foster at first, with blonde hair.

Figures the 1% would put themselves above the sky.

2013-04-10 02:48:16 AM
So its Halo meets Mass Effect meets Dune meets District 9 meets Battle Angel Alita.

2013-04-10 02:58:55 AM
Nah, I'd rather watch that film about 2 car drivers by Ron Howard. It's more human.

/kidding; take my money!

Looks badass but I honestly hope it doesnt take that how bad society sucks overall commentary that district 9 did, district 9 just got annoying after awhile

District 9 was one of the few movies I've seen in awhile that got me more interested the longer it went on.

2013-04-10 03:09:20 AM
Looks awesome.

Still have my fingers crossed for a District 9 sequel, but I wouldn't want anyone else to do it; can wait until either he feels the urge to do it himself or for hell to freeze over.

Agreed. That and Skyline.

Love D9, but the "in the future, the 1% live in perfect health and luxury while the 99% starve in ruins" trope is so played out. Visually this looks amazing but the premise (based on what's revealed in the trailer) is overdone.

2013-04-10 03:22:30 AM
I see what you did there

Yeah, we live it everyday. It's getting old.

Am I going to get my e-peen chopped off if I say that I didn't think District 9 was all that great

2013-04-10 04:23:10 AM
Plot with no internal means of support.
A-list actors.
Tech that works counter to reality.

Total sci-fi boom-fest.

No, The All-Powerful Atheismo, District 9 wasn't all that great.  It was excellent that someone made it but the clap-trappiness just didn't look real.

2013-04-10 04:25:34 AM
The trailer doesn't explain what he hopes to do when he gets there.. but then some people whine that trailers give away the whole movie, so it's hard to get the balance right.

Generally how bad am movie is when you see it seems to correlate with how much the show you in the trailer, in my opinion  so maybe great things are ahead

I thought District 9 and Skyline were garbage....

If it comes out 8/9/13, I'm expecting the meteor to hit 8/8/13.

I'm glad someone pointed out the conceptual debt that trailer owes Mass Effect.

Blokamp grew up in South Africa and lived in that sort of society.  I accept him making movies that focus on that because it really is happening.  Sure, in America thinks are that insanely divided, but in other parts of the world they are.

The special effects on this are gorgeous, I don't know what the aim of Damon's character is, and over all I want that movie to be out now so they can take my damn money!

I'm not seeing the Dune. I'm only familiar with the first three books, but then most everyone just ignores the rest anyway (if they don't focus only on the first to begin with).

I don't see a messiah-emperor, a man trying to prevent a terrible future (or causing that future in order to prevent something even worse), an addictive mystical life-prolonging drug, a secretive society attempting to breed a god, a low-tech yet galaxy-spanning empire, or a theme that high technology is evil. The Earth-bounded poor may parallel the Fremen but only superficially. Dune doesn't even carry a theme of oppression by the oligarchy (except possibly the Harkonnen), despite the feudal political system: the Corrino Empire wasn't particularly oppressive, at least in any way that's described in the books, and really the Atreides Empire was worse in that regard. Even Duke Leto specifically encourages certain propaganda in order to control his population - obviously it can be assumed that all the ruling houses do this, but if even an ostensibly virtuous figure like the Duke would rely on manipulation to serve his ends, well...

So what am I missing that references Dune? Perhaps something that I don't really consider important to the Dune story, but more likely something really basic that makes me really stupid not to see it.

I agree, I'm not seeing it either.

That story may be in the movie but it isn't in the trailer.

The story in the trailer is "they have what we can't AND let's go blow their shiat up." That's a very different story.

Looks good. Visually amazing, which is necessity for sci-fi, but with what will likely be a strong social commentary, another crucial aspect of sci-fi that many neglect.

I'll be in line when it comes out. Did someone say 8/9/2013? That's just two days after my birthday, so happy birthday to me I guess.

This will be the most accurate future prediction movie OF ALL TIME. The 99% see the trailer and say, "Meh, this societal separation thing in movies is played out." The 1% see it and say, "Is this happening, are they working on this tech? Where do I sign up?"
