Am I the only one who thinks we're in a really, really ugly phase as far as fashion goes? I'm usually pretty generous. I liked the entire decade of 1998-2008, for example. But giant baby pins as necklace pendants? And camo pants? Come the fark on. Both of these things have been around for, like, at least thirty years. I thought fashion was supposed to be innovative.

This. I once saw some interviews with the cast of The Wire, and it took me a good ten minutes to figure out how the rest of them could stand to be in the same room as Wood Harris (Avon Barksdale), talking civilly with him.

If an actor can make himself invisible behind his character - he's a good actor.

A punchable face is an asset in hollywood, you need between two and one hundred antagonists for every protagonist, depending on the show's format.

Fashion cycles every 30 years. So it's time for the awesome fashions of the 80s to start appearing. I've actually been noticing a lot of neon lately.

Is this true for every century, though? It's definitely true in the 20th. But it seems we've stalled on this 30 year cycle thing. 80s--yep. Even mullets are back, and lots of other 80s crap has been in a for a while--the stiletto pump, parachute pants that are loose but tie at the bottom and other pants that are higher waisted and taper at the bottom. Thin ties for young guys. I wish we'd go back to the 20s and 30s, if we must go back. I guess I'd say 65% of the popular fashion in the last thirty years has been retro and the rest, progressive. Before that, it seemed fashion was always progressive.

Now we just have to find out who Walt Jr. is.

Fashion's been pretty much stuck in a rut for the last twenty years; there really hasn't been anything new or innovative in a while.

No it's not. If that were true, people in the 60s and 70s would have been dressing like the 30s and 40s. And people in the 40s would have dressed like they lived in the Edwardian era.

Not really. Fashion has always been a variation on what's come before. The douche-bag "take a golf visor and wear it upsidedown and backwards" idiocy has its roots in the Medieval period, when it became fashionable to take a hood with a long tail, put your head into the face-hole, and use the long tail to tie the hood in place.

Here's the thing that changed in the last 50 years: teenagers and extended adolescence.
