WM bought out Asda, but the chain retains original management and policy. Regarding FSA standards and all levels of commerce governed by the TSA. Their stores are renowned for high pay and good benefits. They won't take you off the streets, you need to temp in with an agency before they'll even consider taking you on. Or as was 3.4 years back before I moved. I had college-age friends, and I've worked for them in the past. FTFY.  Seeing as the food was apparently contaminated with Bute, I'd start to seriously check to see if we have Yet Another Case Of Belmont Steak In The Ground Chuck. :D

For those unaware--Bute is a fairly common drug given to racehorses and dogs as an NSAID painkiller.  The concern about it showing up in the food supply (completely aside from the strong likelihood that the presence of Bute indicates the presence of Belmont steak in "beef") is that the drug is known to cause bone marrow shutdown in children including aplastic anemia (this is Bad).  This is, as a note, why Bute isn't approved for any use in humans in the US and only approved in the UK for palliative treatment of intractable ankylosing spondylitis (basically a genetic disease that presents as a particularly nasty inflammatory arthritis; Mick Mars (yes, as in Mötley Crüe's guitarist) is one of the more famous folks with the disease, and has already had to not only have hip replacements but literally has to get his back broken once a year to keep from becoming a complete invalid...one could argue he NEEDED the heroin in the 80s).

Personally, I usually only ever eat corned beef hash as a left over after St Patricks day... that is.. if any part of the Corned beef brisket has survived that is.

Yeaaaah this is the canned stuff, nothing fancy. Just sometimes I wake up and want it for breakfast on a weekend, usually with eggs. Reminds me of the old family camping trips.

That was my thought exactly.  At least in the states bute is on the list of drugs that are illegal to give to food animals (even "pet" cows not destined for the dinner plate) under any circumstances but is commonly used in horses (since they're not SUPPOSED to be food animals).  The article seemed to indicate that the horsemeat and the bute were two separate cases of contamination but I'm wondering if they're just two symptoms of the same contamination.

I dont understand whats sick about administering medicine to animals you intend to eat... and it seems logical that you might find traces in its flesh afterwards.

You can white knight Asda if you want to but they have got very dodgy ever since Walmart took over. Take the fact they use lots of temp agency staff who get paid less than regular staff who do the same job, how they fire the temps after two months and two days so they can't be classes as employees under the law, how staff have to work beyond paid shifts to finish the job, trying to bribe people to leave a union etc etc.

All round not a nice place to work from the daughter of a colleague at work.

looks like we are gonna have to do something....like making it illegal to test meat for these drugs.  this sort of thing can't continue.

The "medicine" wasn't administered to animals intended for eating. It got into the corned "beef" hash, because like apparently every other processed meat in Europe, there was horse in there, and racehorses are routinely given this particular painkiller.

/Not a dangerous amount in the food, and less than 1 percent horse, so meh.
