tripleseven: I've (gasp) actually played a few games...like 15 years ago...hackey sack...the same people.

Yeah, your perception of the sport is hilariously outdated.  It's basically the equivalent of saying, "Oh yeah, I know all about basketball.  I played back in the 60s.  It's all skinny white guys wearing short shorts!"

Nurglitch: An interesting variant, I don't know how official, was playing in an area about 50'x50' with a yard square in the middle as the 'goal.' And you scored when someone held it in the middle after tagging outside the playing area. Lots of fun.

Yep, that's Hot Box.  Not really "official," but definitely a pretty standard variant for pickup games with not enough people and/or space.

tripleseven: I never met someone who was really into ultimate that wasn't a douchebag. It seems to attract bitter douchebags who couldn't play sports in hs. And I'm not defending his sports either.

I know I'm late to the party here, but this is spot on. I played for a year in college because I was hoping the team was going to be filled with stoners, but instead it was hyper-competitive jerks who were all second tier athletes with a chip on their shoulder about not being cut out for real sports. Look, Ultimate is a fun game, it should be treated that way, and not like a "serious competition".
