It's really not a big deal. There's a gene for it that has been isolated as well as a gene for picking scabs and pulling out hair. Of the three, nail biting is the one that carries the least consequence. I live with a nail biter and both my mother and brother have that compulsion. They all have fine teeth. I don't know where you are getting your info, but it's seriously out of date.

If you've ever spent any time in a women's dressing room with dancers, you will hear an absolute symphony of cracking. I still hit my toes and back and fingers every morning. The toes are especially satisfying.

I maintain nothing on earth, with the possible exception of oral sex, compares to the burst of satisfaction and release you can get from learning to pop the ribs right between your shoulder blades forward enough to crack them and release pressure off the vertebrae after decades of constant low level discomfort. Not the spine, by twisting, but learning to flex your pecs forward while bracing your shoulders up with your deltoids, so your ribs crack. If you've got a head forward posture at all, learning to do this should be the top of your list.

No, they won't, unless you acknowledge the difference between nail chewing/biting and compulsive nail chomping. The kind of chewing they are talking about in this article involves more or less making a scissor action on the edge to break the nail, and then using your teeth as a plane to split off a piece of nail, using saliva to soften the nail as you go. That's different than the hard vigorous compulsive nail chomping using force that results in teeth snapping together with a pronounced click. Using your teeth to chew off a nail gently, even if you do it down to the nub as a bad habit, doesn't damage your teeth any more than any other chewing, and nail enamel is a lot softer than many foods that no one thinks twice about.

Damage comes from clicking your teeth together with excessive force. There's plenty of ways to chew your nails off without clicking your teeth together.

I'm in my late 30's, My first bottom tooth(when I was actually in the process of biting my nail) broke about 5 years ago or so. The others followed rather quickly.

While, I guess in some way, my poor dental care in my youth, combined with my genetically inferior British Teeth were somewhat to blame, the fact I have been a life ling nail biter, and the fact that my teeth broke while actually biting my nails seems to jibe with the other posters assertion.
