Why does it matter that she was a former cop? The guy killed a person, and personally I think it's more interesting that she gave it all up to raise kids.

The only guy in the LCMS who was able to call himself a bishop is from the English District, which my husband belongs as Pastor Emeritus and also our current congregation we attend services.  If our Bishop pulls that drinking while driving crap, I will personally give him a cock-punch, and urge the judge to let him rot in jail for utter stupidity and disregard for human life.

I grew up Missouri Synod & they were not tea totalers. They stayed true to their heritage as card-playing, beer-drinking Germans. My dad used to give our pastor a bottle of whiskey as a Christmas present.

That's a crock of shiat.  When I was a grad student at one of our seminaries, we have a Friday post-class happy hour (Gemütlichkeit!) and students and profs drank beer together.  And every year we have a symposia...and beer is included.

Cool story, sis time: Last year, the president of the Synod was there at the symposia.  There were receptions and I saw Harrison hosting the wine table.  "What would you like?" he asked.

"VODKA! NOW!!!"

"Consider that you were clamoring for it, you do not need it.  Have some wine instead."

Yeah- MO Synod definitely do drink. The church I mentioned above is LCMS. The local LCMS seminarians visit the local bars with some frequency. Martin Luther himself was known to be something of a beer snob for the time.

Cool Story, Sis: Mom is ELCA Lutheran, Dad is Roman Catholic. They raised us kids in the ELCA as 'Lutherans with Catholic tendencies' because of the whole ordaining-women thing, but Mom still managed to use Dad's Cath-ness as an excuse to get out of lutefisk and Jell-O Salad. We were the only children in Sunday School who were spared both horrors. Between that and getting all these cool books and trading cards about the saints, and being the only kids with rosaries, I really had a great time in church.
