I thought it was pretty apparent that Obama likes movies and hates Britain after his gift of DVDs to the Prime   Minister that caused an international incident a couple of years back.

To my knowledge, Ebert didn't support Apartheid in SA or Pinochet. He also wasn't a mean-spirited asshole who viewed the poor and leeches worthy of nothing more than contempt.

That alone makes him more worthy of praise than Thatcher.

Margaret Thatched destroyed trade unions more effectively than anyone since the early 1900's.  She did such a marvelous job of hollowing out the English middle class that when wages and benefits are cut today, no one says a peep.  She and Ronald Reagan can hold the death of the middle class as their primary accomplishment.

Maybe a statement about a dead movie critic requires a bit less critical review than one about a former Prime Minister? I doubt the State Department cared about reviewing the language for Ebert.

If the US had the same degree of cause to go into Iraq as the UK had in responding to the Faulkland's incident, we'd still be cheering GW Bush.  While the war was stupid, and demonstrated numerous problems that had crept into the UK military, the blame for that one rests entirely on Argentina, in particular the leaders of the military which used the nationalistic dog whistle to try to retain popularity.

And I'd have used the image of Ronald Reagan's political girlfriend.  Those two fauned over each other.  And the policies pursued by both of them have left lasting negative impacts to their respective countries.
