There's always something I find vaguely amusing about repurposed stores where you can still tell what they used to be.

One near me recently became a gym. The other has been sitting abandoned for over a year

The one near me became a 24hour fitness.

The one near me became a Korean restaurant / karaoke bar.

Near me one became a AAA Auto, one became a Uniform City, and one became a 24-hour clinic.  Another is still abandoned.

So now that we've reached Peark Gourmet Burger Craze, what will replace all of these Five Guys/Smashburger/Teddy's Bigger Burgers?

There's building nearby that for the longest time was a Burger King. It then became a Mexican restaurant, then another Mexican restaurant. Now it's a Mexican store.

One near me is magically still open. However many years back, there were two... within an 1/8th mile... in flyover farm country. Unfortunately only the one closed and not both.

Sounds like the fiance and I. Frozen pizza and a redbox (or Netflix) movie.

My local blockbuster was ass. It was ass because the manager was a major asshole, and they never got rid of her. Years ago, when I'd go to rent video games, she'd have STACKS of games behind the counter, and the other employees would practically BEG her to put them out, but for some idiotic reason she insisted on holding them there for up to several weeks after release.

In other words, we never had new release games at our local blockbuster.

None of the other employees understood why she held them back... but she did. Week after week. I even asked her several times about the games stacked up, and her only explanation was a curt "we haven't put them out" and pressed for a reason why, she'd angrily reply "they go out when I say they go out." Eventually, I stopped trying to rent games from Blockbuster.

They are currently being liquidated. Good riddance. Sad for the employees, but the manager ran that store into the ground, which was pretty bad considering they didn't have far to fall, given the competition (RedBox, Netflix, etc...).

The one closest to me became a Sherwin Williams about a year ago. The Blockbuster in the town over lasted a little longer, but closed and quickly became a "Five Below" (a northeast chain of dollar store typed goods aimed at teenagers).

What's up with this burger fad lately? One of the Blockbusters here in San Francisco is also becoming a burger place.

It was Hollywood Video in my area became a three way split store of 5 Guys, Panda, and self serve yogurt place. The Blockbuster down the street became Sketchers shoe store.

You mean they aren't going to demolish a perfectly good building because the business failed?

There's a Taco Bell building near me that over the past 10 years has become a swinger's bar. I would call that a move up.

Do Americans have the same phenomenon as Australia, where Pizza Hut abandoned their dine-in business in the 90s and left a bunch of strangely-roofed store spaces strewn across suburbia?

The Blockbuster in my hometown was split between a Five Guys Burgers and a dental outfit. Strange bedfellows.

And the odds of it being real meat have improved.

When I moved to my town, there was a building right around the corner from me that I could tell had been built as a Wendy's - but by then it was a physical therapist's office.  Then they moved and got a bigger office, and it became a Starbucks.  I don't think of this as an upgrade.

*sniff*

I loved that Pizza Hut as a kid. They had the arcade version of Toobin' and what we used to call "Advanced Mario" which I found out was the MAME version of Super Mario Bros. Used to get as far as we could before the pizza was finished. Only in adulthood with the MAME emulator did I ever finish that game.

It's a chain called Sweet Tomatoes now.

Haha. Some parts of the arcade version of SMB were much harder/more frustrating. Just an example, in 8-3 (the castle wall background level) there were no power ups in the bricks where the hammer bros were. So if you started the level small, you had to get through them all small. In 8-4 last Bowser castle, remember the pipe you go down that you hit the invisible block for cause it's suspended in the air? The invisible block was higher up. You had to jump on and bounce off the jumping koopa at the exact peak of his jump, otherwise you would miss and have to scroll the screen back around and possibly run out of time.

While a lot of the game was the exact same, I think it was world 6 that had this off the wall level that you know was just designed to be a quarter eater.

Good times.
