U.S. trying to stop a nuke strike on Japan - it's a perfect circle.

I wonder if they could convert some of their anti-Godzilla systems to deal with a North Korean attack.

In this game of brinksmanship...or "international game of chicken" as I like to call it...will the newbie norkie blink in time?  'Cause a lot of countries are at least acting as if they're tired of this crap and ready to rumble.

So China steps up on the talking about NK but not talking about NK in so far as they think that certain countries should chill on the rhetoric and yet said country doesn't listen and just amps the dial again.

I'm gonna keep calling it.

NK attacks, US and SK flatten the military in a week via unilateral UN resolution, and China steps in to act as 'peace keepers and stabilizers' with SK as a partner.

And of course by stabalize I mean extract resources and exploit a vast cheap labor pool

Er... I'm pretty sure these are the Patriot missiles that Japan owns and controls. They've deployed them before when things got tense with the Norkers.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if NK wanted to attack why the heck would they keep posturing and aiming missiles and letting everyone know they're going to attack?

If I was them I would shut up, ease of the rhetoric, get some food because now I'm playing nice and then right after the next major world crisis start lobbying my arms.

Of course the end result would still be the same a flattened Nk and deposed leader...but hey this way I at least place on the scoreboard instead of getting shut out.

Seems to be that way, if the US doesn't insist on being "peacekeepers" as they have been since the North Korean war was temporarily halted. Then instead of the Chinese industry getting those natural resources and cheap labor, it will be US and SK industries primarily getting the natural resources and cheap labor with China cut out of everything.

"Traditionally", this is how a) North Korea gets more aid and b) A North Korean leader consolidates power (nothing says "Back the despot!" like the threat of a daunting foreign invader).  Kim Jong Un being an unknown quantity, things are a little tense...and a lot of people are tired of this b.s. ploy, so it isn't the smoothly-operating, well-oiled machine that extortion used to be under Kim Jong Il, wherein America was criticized for not being more a part of negotiations, and appeasement was the word of the day.

*ok. I call that it actually reaches California. And if that wasn't enough, the explosion triggers 'the big one' and western Cali slips into the sea. How's that for a "what's the worst that can happen?" Just needs an easterly wind to carry the fall-out across the US.

No, SK has a cheap labor pool to exploit and NK has mineral resources China wants and the people of NK get jobs and food which they desperately need.

Endive Wombat: Do you really, honestly see NK being THAT suicidal?

Yes actually I do, especially when you are facing your nation experiencing the worst famine in decades.

Which is a faster path towards reunification and a stronger western presence, so China will play ball this time around so they can be involved.

That would be crazy but NK's longest-range missile can only reach Alaska and hasn't had a successful test flight from what I've read.

So is this "suicide mission" noble in anyway?  As in - Un knows that he will be killed by his countrymen or by the swift actions of the US...so he is taking the quicker route/ forcing the nation to change in a significant way?

Here is my conspiracy theory - Un wants out.  He never wanted to lead a county and was thrust into the position without his say.  He's had a Western education and knows that the status quo of NK is both not sustainable and pretty damn evil/bleak.  He has already discussed this with the highest levels of government between China, SK, USA, and Japan.  He is afraid of the olde generals who still cling to 1950's communist and warmongering rhetoric, so he is purposely stirring shiat up will force the hand of the more powerful nations to do what he cannot.

Cheap labor possible.. but does South Korea make anything in a fashion that is not automated?

They actually have vast amounts of mineral resources just sitting there because they lack the ability to extract and process

More or less, in starting a war he is in fact saving his country.

2013-04-09 10:36:03 AM
The best thing that could be happening is for Russia, China, the US and SK to agree that this is not an acceptable state. Being threatened with nuclear apocalypse daily by a young and dumb despot is certainly not acceptable to the US, SK, and Japan. So whatever happens, this can't continue much longer. Not sure where the Russians and Chinese stand, but it really would be best for the big three powers to all agree that it is simply not acceptable and work together to bring it to an end. That might mean some kind of instant overwhelming military response to disable NK's offensive capabilities. It would probably also mean concessions from the US to the Chinese and Russians. Maybe a reduction or removal of US troops from Korea after all is said and done. But I really think it would be a good step for our civilization for the big powers to work together on this. We're at a point as a species where we have incredible destructive power, but petty monkey brains sometimes overtaken by emotion and delusions. The main thing that needs addressing is to make sure this does not turn into a bigger global conflict due to entangling alliances.

Assuming my speculation is correct, and Un lives through this whole thing, it would be REALLY interesting to see an interview with him, breaking down how he hated his homeland, the fact that his grandfather and father were evil men...he had to start a war to get the country out of the rut it has been in for so many years...I mean, that would be something huh?

Here's the thing: they're not. No troop movements, no equipment deployments, no factories being fired up... nothing. I'd love it if President Obama addressed the nation, letting the North Koreans know that we know that they're lying. It's time to call this butthole's bluff and get this over with.

Does anything about this whole situation sound sane to you?

NK has been under sanctions/embargo since 2006 (please correct me if in wrong, it was a quick google) yet we are going "oh, poor hungry folks in North Korea".
Does that sound sane to you?

War planes flying by, warships passing by, but the moment NK has any kind of military movement it's "Crazy Norks!"
Sane?

Ok, so they can only (supposedly) reach Alaska, what's going to happen to oil prices if that happens?
What if they hit China (under pretenses of selling them out)? Japan?
Hell, if they hit the panic button and just shoot their whole arsenal of regular weapons at SK!

Are we pretending we are out of the financial crisis?

This is all not even taking into account the direct loss of life in any scenario. I'm just trying to look at the big picture.

NK is like that weird kid in class no one wants to sit next to. The more people cut him off the weirder he gets. He starts wearing all black with a black overcoat and a weird haircut (what a fitting example!)*.
The only question is that will someone befriend the kid and he loosens up? Will he just graduate and find himself in the real world? Or will he come in one day with a death wish, guns blazing, hunting down who in his mind are the bullies.

*no disrespect to our resident Goths.
