I ate some salmonellad chicken a few years ago. (described the taste to a food health specialist at the local U, he said "youp, that sounds exactly like what it's 'supposed' to taste like".) It tasted slightly like how sewage smells, but saltier. Poor, hungry and really wanting to get back to the raid I just downed the plate, burped profusely, and sent a small prayer to the god of brown gooey vengance for mercy while downing a couple of liters of coke as the night went on.
Didn't have any problems at all. Either my stomach is made of adamantine and spite, coke kills salmonella, or my favourite, the one true God is the merciful god of brown gooey vengance :)

I worked in a food plant that was regulated by the USDA (not the FDA) and this article makes the FDA inspectors sound like a bunch of neutered wimps. Not a tenth of the BS foot-dragging that the article describes the company doing would have been possible under the USDA. They had the authority to close the plant and chain the doors at a moment's notice if they found something really bad.

FDA must be a bit different, unfortunately.

At what point does a company switch from USDA to FDA oversight? Is it similar to how I don't get taxed on raw chicken but get taxed on precooked wings? Why not have everything for human consumption under one set of rules?

No experience beats food poisoning for ick, You really start to question life when you are sitting on the pot with a bucket in your lap and bounce between alternating which orifice things are charging out of, or having them both going full blast at the same time.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. My wife thinks I'm crazy when I order beef sashimi but raw poultry? Screw that.

/Beef sashimi is perfectly safe when prepared correctly (outside of the meat is seared)

But Free market will take care of them if there is a major outbreak. The'd loose all the customers that tracked the news, remembered the company name, and recognized all of their different brand names, and more importantly the specific facility because if Chung stops making egg rolls at that facility, the same facility and staff will be assembling Applebe's appetizers in a few months.

They sure would hate to have to change their company name after poisoning a dozen people.

The puffer fish is comparatively safe (and delicious). I checked the Japanese article on chicken sashimi for fun, and it indicates that there are about 500 of poisoning per year due to this dish.

It *was* quite tasty, just not worth two weeks of hell.

One Saturday years ago I was hungry and headed to Captain D's (seafood fast food). I ordered shrimp scampi and it tasted pretty good but when I was a little over half finished I suddenly started feeling nauseous, then really ill. Drove the 5 mins to get home and immediately threw up, had the dry heaves, drank some water and threw up again. Within about a hour I was feeling OK again. Shortest bout of food poisoning ever.

Funny, I stopped eating those because I noticed on the package it said "Made in China" and this was stocked at a Kroger's store, too.

Anyway, 5-6 months later I look at a box and it says "Made in USA" in big red script. I thought great! Bought a box (that had no adverse effects) but I think I've probably eaten my last Chung's spring roll.

Gross!!
