I made mention of this vehicle a few months back. All this effort for a mobile arctic base/lab/aircraft carrier, and they gave the damn thing SMOOTH tires!
No wonder it didn't go very far after it was unloaded onto the ice pack.

After WWII, it was rediscovered and then left in place again, but was never found again after that expedition. Rumor has it that either the Soviets took it for themselves or that it was carried away when a huge chunk of the ice shelf broke off, and it's now at the bottom of the ocean after the iceberg melted.

Was that the last known photo of the Tucker Sno-Cat 743 Double Drive, just before it plunged into a crevasse never to be seen again?

Every one of them looks cooler than any snowmobile used today.

Yes, that first one has smooth tires and an indirect drive. Something to do with not spinning the tires and burrowing in.

That's a radial engine, not a jet. It just doesn't have the prop mounted.

In my favorite Clive cussler book, the main characters borrow a repaired and upgraded version of that big red machine and drive across the anartic and use it to defeat nazis.

/it was AWESOME

These must be pretty common.  My mom's got 3 or 4 in her nightstand.  She was snowmobiling all night last night.  Kept waking up the dog.

I saw the snowshoe setup on a Model T when I went to a car show as a kid in New York.  Somewhere in a box I have Instamatic pics of it.

It doesn't matter what your riding in. Danforth still goes mad at the end.

Came here for the modified Ford farm tractor that Edmund Hillary and "Bunny" Fuchs used on the Trans-Antarctica Expedition, leaving satisfied.

I love the "armored" snowmobile.  Plywood covered with a 10mm plate in front.  So, if the attackers were carrying derringers, you'd be safe...so long as they were firing directly from the front.

Yes, but now you can be driven mad in style.

Yeah, how could they write up the "Mailman's Special", give all of those pictures, then not include that one?

to be fair a 10mm mild steel plate will stop a surprising range of different rounds. except for steel-cored AP type stuff... that stuff can go through it.

that said, my brother in law does a lot of business working on quads and snowmobiles. he thought the article was pretty cool.

The video was cool right up until the 3:00 mark when the animal abuse started.  Had to shut it down.
