I can write in cursive just fine if need be, but I can't say I care one way or another if it fades from regular use.

I am left handed so I learned to write in Hebrew.

I just like how when I was an elementary school kid in the 90s how the teachers used to keep telling us how important cursive was and that was how people in high school and college wrote. The 00s biatchslapped that concept right back to earth, I wonder if kids these days even learn it anymore.

The only reason my cursive isn't a complete disaster is because I haven't got a printer and still need to write letters to my grandmother, who's over 90 and doesn't have a computer or use email. I do think it's important to keep it alive -- if nothing else, people need to be able to *read* it if they don't want an awful lot of the historical record to become illegible. (It's awful when fashions in writing change -- ever try reading anything in secretary hand? You can do it, but you have to really want to).

I can count on one hand the number of times I have ever needed to write anything in cursive that wasn't for school, church, or relatives so old they remember when Hawaii and Alaska weren't states yet.  None of my employers have ever wanted things in cursive, and quite a few have actually complained about things written in cursive.

Cursive is the Buggy Whip Manufacturer of the written word.  It was developed in the era of quill pens when taking the pen from the page meant more chance of breaking your quill.  It's not really relevant these days.

While you are at it whipping people, have you ever written anything in another language? Like say, Japanese? They have their standards too. Cursive and "proper Engrish" taught me to have my own flair, that is, someone personal knows I didn't pick some generic cutsey font on my computer and print out xmas cards. You knew it came from me.

I mean, teach people how to read it, but really, should someone be graded on something that is basically calligraphy anymore. If people love the art of handwriting, by all means, let them elect to take courses in it. It's not a lifeskill to be able to write in cursive anymore though.

I could still write in cursive, if I wanted to.

The problem is, I can't READ cursive. Not even my own handwriting.

I can DECIPHER cursive, IE, I can look at it and figure out what the words are based on contextual clues, but simply reading through it and I run into the ambiguities like the ones that propasaurus already pointed out. It's like decoding some ancient language.

So yeah, I can decode it, but I can't sit there and read it straight out (and I'm a speed reader so I find that annoying as all shiat).

It's become little more than a niche hobby; students are far more likely to receive a grade in keyboarding than in penmanship.

The education system is full of a lot of cruft.

I had a programmable calculator back in high school, and a math teacher that insisted on us learning the multiplication tables up to 12x12.

She used to give us sheets of 50+ problems to keep us busy while she helped the stupid kids.

All of the 50 problems could be solved using the same equations.

I would show my work on the first problem, then program the equation into my calculator and just punch in the variables.

She would get ticked that I finished it quickly (and started doing homework for other classes), and didn't show my work on all the problems.

Look lady, I knew the equation well enough to program it into a calculator. Just let me do my English homework in peace.

Definitely a generational thing, but my gut prejudice is that you're uneducated if you can only write in block letters.
