I can hardly wait.  One of my favorite bands.  And the performer of the State Rock song of Oklahoma.

At least we got something right!  I'm about 2/3 through my first listen.  I'll have to run through it a couple more times, but I like what I hear so far.

I have never really gotten into these guys, but holy shiat this is really good

Is the title referring to their excessive use of compression?

Stephen Thompson, of TFA, is on NPR's "Pop Culture Happy Hour," which is a fun podcast.

Been listening for a few hours now.

This album is super-bleak. It is also a whole hell of a lot better than either Embryonic or Mystics.

/last track is the best.

There's this one guy I hate personally who looks like Wayne Coyne. I refer to him as Wayne Clone. He always smells like the homeless shelter didn't have any soap.

I can't wait until Ben Folds covers the one or two decent songs on this album.  The Flaming Lips have written some of his best songs.

Every time I have met Wayne Coyne he's been extremely gracious.  He also smells like the Norman Long John Silver's didn't have any soap...

I like the first track, but the rest is shiat without any variety at all. Take away any knowledge of what's happened to Wayne or Steve in recent years and it loses all impact.

honestly, I think it's stuff like this that made me so disappointed with The Terror. All their projects after Embryonic (i.e. the remake of DSotM, In the Court of the Crimson King, the hit or miss Heady Fwends album, the really long songs, etc.) have felt like a lot of farking-around, so when it comes time to actually create a new album, they don't really have shiat to show for it. I'm really not getting the love for the new album beyond it being surprisingly bleak.

I got depressed just reading the track list.

While I disagree with you about  Mystics, I agree that  Embryonicwas a little bit of a mess. But it did kick all kinds of ass when I saw them live

They are apparently working on an album with Ke$ha. It will be called Lip$ ha. I am not making this up.

In the middle of listening to it.  Love it.  The dreamy atmosphere reminds me a bit of The Daysleepers.

Am I the only one who finds these guys highly overrated? I've been subjected to at least 3 of their shows due to their ubiquitous festival presence, and have had friends try to drag me to several others. Even the personality of the lead singer at the shows is grating.

Yes yes, I know, don't come in the thread & hate, but gah. This farking group. Go away.

There's apparently a sequel or companion piece to Christmas on Mars coming down the pike too since We're getting the side projects out of the way. Also, not feeling this. Who the hell wants the FLips bleak?

2013-04-09 09:53:54 AM
The Iron & Wine listen on the side tab. That's the actual Flaming Lips album, right?

Spartapuss: Also, not feeling this. Who the hell wants the FLips bleak?

my problem is not that the album is bleak, it's that there's no diversity to the album at all. All the tracks just kind of bleed into each other and nothing really happens. I'm pretty sure Flaming Lips could do bleak and terrifying really well, but this is not a good example of such.

I'm going to go ahead and disagree with both of you; I thought Embryonic was a brilliant change of pace, and their second best album, after the Soft Bulletin. I'm really looking forward to this one, preordered it weeks ago.

I just imagine really cute girls dressed in outrageously provocative costumes gyrating suggestively on either side of my speakers.  Sounds fine.

Didn't really like Embryonic very much.
Yoshimi was ok except for a few songs, which were great.
Soft Bulletin was better than Yoshimi, but I often can't listen past the first four or five songs.

Mystics is by far my favourite album of theirs.
Funky, rocky, beautiful, fragile, wonderous, etc.

I am looking forward to this new one.

Loved Soft Bulletin. Embryonic wasn't bad, Mystics was hit or miss, Yoshimi was on loop in high school and haven't really played it since. Anyway, can't wait to listen to this whilst properly farked up on a friday night.
