I've visited the Herd Museum to see their Indian Boarding School exhibit. Just down the road is one of the old Indian Schools where they force-ably took young native children from their people and sent them 100s of miles away to have their hair shaved off, clothes burned and language expunged and humiliated in an effort to make them 'white'. These schools opened in the late 1800s and the one here Phoenix closed in 1990. The idea of making Indians 'white' meant making them learn english, learn trades that were manual labor only and making them be neither accepted by their own tribes or by white people.

You wonder why Natives distrust whites in this nation? Look no further than this.

Qui Gon and Princess Leia?

The Hopi head dress would have been for girls who hadn't married, yet. I can't imagine how big of a pain in the ass that must've been to put up every day.

I'm 1/4 Eastern Band Cherokee, and I've heard some pretty awful stories on the res. If you want to see someone get *really* mad, have someone start blathering on about reparations for slavery on an Indian reservation. That person just might not make it off alive.

I'm pretty sure the one on the left is a practical joke on the cracker that was pestering his tribe for a photo.  "Hey Little Tree, this honky won't leave us alone until we make ourselves look primitive for his amusement... go make a Halloween costume with a face like a surprised investment banker taking it up the ass."

I'm glad you find the hairstyles of the survivors of the genocide of the natives of North America amusing subby.

So basically TSG line-ups existed in 1890?

Dude who believes he's a tribal chief.
Guy who adorned himself with feathers.
Cute chick with funky hair
Man in an owl costume.
Goth chick.

All joking aside these are fantastic shots.

/there's still plenty of sadness and issues on modern reservations.

My paternal grandmother was a San Carlos Apache who was born on the reservation when AZ was still a territory. She and other children from the tribe were sent to a Catholic convent in Tucson where they were taught by nuns. She left the convent when she married at age 15. She never spoke "proper" English; she had a rather unusual accent, and always pronounced Tucson as "tuke-sun."

There is no reasonable argument with the conclusion that Native Americans were profoundly mistreated.

On a different topic, am I the only one who has noticed that people with Native American heritage often have great hair? I'm totally jealous of such a beautiful, thick head of hair. It looks like hair that could be styled any darn way they wanted. Plus, they often have great cheek bones.

/it's not racist if I'm saying something nice, is it?

My grandmother was born in 1903 in the Oklahoma Indian Territories. She was half Comanche, and her father was the first Indian in that area to purchase property in a town. Her mother, a white woman born in 1879, lived until 1973 so she went from riding on a wagon train to seeing men land on the moon. Maximum culture shock.

Don't use "squaw". It's a pejorative.  At least now it is.

Well, there's the "Princess Leia" and the Hairnicorn. Those were pretty amusing. The "Chewbacca and an Ewok had a love-child" was pretty funny. The "my head is a bird, your argument is invalid" is somewhat amusing.

I work at a reservation near San Diego.  Most of the time when I tell people in LA where I work, they're amazed or don't know what to say.  Probably culture shock for Subby to see photos from that time.  Out of sight, out of mind...
