A year ago, I got pulled over and brought in to the station for a speeding ticket that I (genuinely) forgot to pay. For a half an hour until they ran my card, I sat on a bench next to a lovely young naked man who got all hopped up on bath salts and broke into his neighbor's house for a refreshing shower. I thought they would have covered him up in some regard, but apparently that's not one of their priorities.

While I will never complain about being seated next to a naked 20 year old man who's not in his right mind, I will say that damn, that must be one helluva drug. Also, it might have just been a coincidence, but I suspect that it makes you a bit less concerned about you dental hygiene.

CSB time

Back in college (2004-2008) this guy I took my freshman seminar with left school to pursue an acting career in Hollywood. He became your typical wannabe actor washout and when he came back to school in my senior year, all he had to really show for his effort were roles in movies that made SyFy TV movies look like works of art.

He would tell us some stories about his time out there though, and he told us about the time that he went to Amanda Bynes' birthday party. He told us that she was a little bit strange, and then things got really weird when she did this ridiculous train line of cocaine. He really didn't want to go into it though. I didn't believe him at the time since he was prone to lying and exaggeration.

Now, I just pause and wonder if it really was true.

For more details, see O'Connor v. Donaldson and Addington v. Texas. Just because someone looks like they may need treatment (in the eyes of mental health professionals and not the tabloids), you can't suspend their Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.

Emptying the mental institutions nation-wide had a LOT more to do with 'mental health care "advocates"' who felt that people should be free to live their lives - even if it meant sleeping under over-passes/murdering random people/pissing themselves in public/being delusional.

It's almost like we should develop some intermediate step between "legal incompetence" -- which often leads to de facto or actual detention -- and "unfettered freedom" -- which clearly isn't working for Bynes -- to help people that can participate in society when treated but cannot be relied upon to manage their own treatment.
