If I were king, driving while texting would have penalties at least as severe as for driving while drunk.

Or drunk driving laws would be as lax as texting while driving laws are.  Distracted driving is distracted driving.

I admit to driving under the influence regularly- I probably have 500 accident-free hours of driving under my belt.  But you people looking down in your lap when behind the wheel genuinely frighten me.

Not to sound sexist (probably get flamed anyway), but I do tend to see more women/teenage girls texting and driving than men.  However, talking while driving seems to cut about even in my area.

I actually had a cabbie whip out his phone and start texting while speeding down an alley in the middle of winter (it was ice, not pavement we were driving on). I tried to get him to stop, but he spoke no English.

I don't think that really enables the behavior at all.  There is no way to actually USE that while driving.  Any attempt to steer will dump the laptop or cause the entire rack to fall off.  Anyone trying to use it wouldn't get your of their driveway, let alone on to a busy street or highway.

factoryconnection: I'm sure that drivers that were jabbering on the phone or texting illegally were completely forthcoming about that when talking to the po-po right after a crash.

Regardless, the theme is the same: pay f*cking attention to the road!  Not just the car within 50 feet of your front bumper, but the actual flow of traffic, the developing scene in visible range, your mirrors, blind spots, everything.

It's just not possible.  I was just recently in a front end accident, what happened was some 79 year old woman decided that she could fit between 2 car lengths on a road.   I really had maybe a sec to react before she pulled into me, nobody can pay attention 100% of the time.  I saw her in the center turning lane but never assumed she would see that small window and think she could make it.

Even if everyone was paying attention 100% of the time there would still be accidents that's why they are called accidents.  shiat happens.

1. Expire Drivers Licenses every 5 years.
2. Require re-certification to get your license renewed, which means testing your current reflexes and basic competency
3. Any involvement in a car accident automatically expires your drivers license and you must re-certify within two weeks.  Significant number of tickets does the same thing, as does DUI or other major infractions
4. Add tests that test your ability to focus with distractions -- that includes screaming kids, you damn soccer moms
5. No pass = NO DRIVE.  Driving with no license = jail and car is confiscated
6. Get rid of the rest of the laws that are only there for revenue generation and demonizing segments of the population

Or, just admit the legal setup is so you can squeeze money out of a minority of drivers in order to prop up the lie that most drivers are competent.
