I was ok with everything up until I saw the iPad.  That just totally put it over the edge for me.  It's outrageous that someone that let something so horrible occur on his watch gets to walk away with a free iPad.

It's good that they gave him the 1.2 mil.  Some scratch to go toward the gift tax he'll incur for getting that iPad.

Not sure how I feel about all of this. On one hand, you can't treat other people like that. On the other hand, college basketball (along with college football) players are basically gods on their campuses. Your education is paid for by the fact that you can put a ball through a net. Offenses that could lead to expulsion for other students simply get you benched. Class schedules are softened. Boosters find ways to get you nice things under the table. At Mizzou, women are too afraid of public reaction to press rape charges against you after a fairly conclusive rape kit is carried out.

Honestly... if I had no moral compass to the point where I could behave in such a manner as a student, I may be inclined to put up with this sort of treatment.

He was probably hired under a contract so the University would have fewer options regarding termination than they would have for a regular "at will" employee.

Unless your contract states otherwise. Which is why you probably have an "employment agreement" that states you can be fired at will, whereas your CEO has one that states that unless he's convicted of raping baby goats on live TV, he gets paid anyway.

Here's the thing about this whole mess: Somebody is lying here. The stories coming from the ex-AD, the school president and the ex-assistant coach who told the school about the coach's abusive behavior are all inconsistent and don't match up. I have a hard time buying anything any of them have said throughout this.

He wasn't fired for cause, because he followed university protocols and followed the recommendation that Rice be "rehabilitated".

Someone at Rutgers talked a lawyer and decides that it was cheaper to just go the severance package route than risk a wrongful termination lawsuit.  The AD's lawyers would argue that putting the coach on probation or whatever the AD meant by trying to handle it internally was sufficient and thus a firing is not warranted.

He should also get shouted at and shoved around by every single member of the student body.  though for 1.2 mil, I think he'd go for it.

My guess is stuff like that happens all the time in college sports but is just not reported or video taped.
