Batman & Robin was the most faithful comic book adaptation ever filmed.

Well, at least some good came of B&R - it gave the Rifftrax guys some great (that is to say, greatly terrible) material to work with.

Wow I just jumped in to post the same thing.  I had never actually seen the full movie before last week.  I watched the Riftrax version of it (I'm not insane after all.)  While the movie is of course terrible, as I watched it I realized that it was intended to be a live adaptation of a comic book and if taken as such it is quite successful.  The colors, the one-liners the strange jumps in the narrative all seem to be exactly what you would get in a comic.

Batman & Robin is a documentary, and the events happened in real time.

When you look at the scope of Batman since the first appearance and how significant the really silly periods of his existence is, it doesn't really matter than Batman and Robin was bad.

Honestly, it's not much worse than the first Tim Burton Batman.  Watched that again recently, and it's just ridiculous.

Had Jack Nicholson channeled his role as Jack Torrance instead of Cesar Romero, that movie would have been infinitely better.

And even when the movie came out, I couldn't get past how immobile Batman was.  Watching him try to kick someone is comical.  That said, the Burton movie is responsible for a lot of stuff we think is awesome in the Nolan flicks.

I loved it at the time but it really has not aged well.  Keaton's portrayal of Wayne holds up pretty well, and Basinger is still fun to look at, but the rest is laughable now.

Still some gems in that movie. The little touches of fun with Jack's Joker. (knocking over the statue) The gadgets for Batman. I don't even mind the reporter guy.

Meh, I don't think there was really that much Cesar in there, sure at times. But it was the playfulness of Romero with a very dark nature. "Like beauty and the beast, but if anyone else calls you beast I'll rip their lungs out"

But I will agree with others, it hasn't aged all that well. Still holds a special place in my heart though, that movie came out during my formative years.

LesserEvil: Do you like Batman and Robin? I've been a big fan ever since the TV series in the 1960s. Before that, I really didn't understand any of the comics. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was in the TV series where Adam West's presence became more apparent. I think Batman and Robin was the franchise's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility.  At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three movies.

No, it really is.  I love bad movies, and I mean really bad, MST3K quality movies.  I tried rewatching this again a few years ago and couldn't force myself to get through the entire thing, there was no joy to be had anywhere, only mind-numbing pain.

I give props to the movie for two reasons -- as previously stated, it indirectly allowed the Nolan reboot to happen.  But before that, it singlehandledly made me realize the potential of bad movies in general.  I saw it in the theater at age 16 and was crushed and disappointed; two years later at age 18, it came on the television while i was getting wasted with friends, and i demanded that we watch a bit of it to see how freaking lame it was... and thus the key to appreciating everything Riff-and-MST3K-Wiseau was planted in my head.  Before that, i was some sort of nascent film snob whose purpose in life was to find the best movies, the best music, the best whatever.  Then i learned that the bad stuff is more interesting.

I like this thread appearing after Batman Weekend on TBS.  

The first Burton movie was truly a sucessor to Batman '66, but with higher quality film stock.  And Prince.

Batman Returns is truly unwatchable, except for the 8 minutes of Christopher Walken on screen.

/Tried to watch B&R and the end of Batman Forever, decided they both would have been pretty good if the cocaine budget was cut in half.

I remember seeing Batman & Robin in the theaters (after Batman Forever, I had only myself to blame), some kids a few rows behind me were so bored they started throwing ice at the back of my head. At that point, I didn't even care. I was far more pissed off at what was happening on the screen in front of me than what those kids were doing behind me.

Painful, painful movie.

I think all the hate piled on Batman & Robin is misplaced. Just another product of internet hivemind. It is by no means a great movie, but it knows exactly what it is - a campy comic book movie - and succeeds at what it tries to do. I don't think many Batman fans like to admit it, but doing a campy Batman is a totally legit take on Batman. The 60's show is one of the most entertaining TV shows ever made - it had a big budget, great writing, and a great cast. Never understood why people think that show is disrespectful to Batman - not every incarnation of Batman has to be dark and angsty. Batman & Robin is in the same vein, and I have no problem with it in that regard.

I also like how people have this idea that Schumacher's Batman films were way campier than Burton's. Just because Burton's films are darker doesn't mean they aren't total campfests - Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, and Michelle Pfeiffer just chew the scenery, and both of Burton's films are overflowing with silly camp. It's not any better than Batman & Robin and at least Batman & Robin is internally consistent and honest about what it's trying to do.

Best batman is, and always will be, Kevin Conroy.

OK, that's it.  I'm sick of this.  I've thought this for a long time, but really, what the hell is wrong with the entertainment threads on Fark?  I swear to god this website is basically the only place on the internet where no matter how awful a movie is, there's going to be some asshole stepping out of the woodworks to defend it, and it usually isn't even some loner, there will inevitably be a bunch of others chiming in to agree.

Their arguments are basically always the same too no matter what they're talking about too.  "People didn't like it because they're snobs, not everything has to be Citizen Kane", or something equally insipid (the post I'm quoting isn't exactly an offender of this, but the lazily pawning off the criticism to internet hivemind is close enough).

I'm just honestly confused as to why this website attracts these people.

Well, this made me have slightly less animosity towards Schumacher.
