Weren't some of the main fundies in the good old USA saying that voting for Obama would bring unprecedented evil to America? Same thing.

So it's like a chain letter, but with voting?

yeah, that's the same thing as the acting President saying vote for me or there's a curse that's gonna gitcha.

Hm, wonder if that would work for the next election cycle. Hand out voodoo dolls, pins with the opponent's name on them, why not?

It's not the same, but it's similar. How about a candidate announcing that he believes God wants him to be president?

No, still not the same. Both of those are personal beliefs, or personal beliefs about things that will happen in general. This curse thingy is saying Do something, or something bad will happen TO YOU. Like an old chain letter, only with demons. It would be like getting a 1970's chain letter on The Candidate's personal letterhead.

Mr. Maduro's invocation of the "curse of the Maracapana"

Whew....I initially read that as "Macarena"-which would have been infinitely worse.

Not a William goat, a willy goat, not even a willy gault.

Only a true billy goat will do.

I wonder if such people responsible for spouting this, believe it, or if they just assume their base is full if utter idiots.  And if so, who wants a base full of idiots.  And if not, they are insulting their base.  Either way, they hate the people that they want to vote along their lines.

Sure it is.

Here's the deal: Most countries south of the USA have quite a bit more Native American (or "injun") blood in their family tree.  It's mostly from rape and kidnapping but that's not the point, the point is that south of the Rio Grande there's a stronger theme of "we're natives, our cultural heritage includes native stuff!"  And it's got an especially strong following in Venezuela.

And what a following it is!  They take the ridiculous "noble savage" stereotype and crank it up to 11, and Hugo Chavez played that tune with his ancient tribal curses and his "practicing with poison arrows" and it worked.  It's the same as when Dubya was "clearing brush" and "working" on a ranch when the man was afraid of horses.  It's an entertaining act that the peons eat up.

So the candidate half-jokingly says calls down a curse of the ancestors, making the point that his opponent would invite foreign imperialist invaders the same way Mitt Romney claims Obama wants to start a religion called secularism.  It's lensed through the local culture, but it's the same general path.  It's also bullshiat and the guy's an asshole, but we knew that when the article pointed out he's a Chavez-fan.

No, "vote for the right guy or YOU will be destroyed." Some people could care less--or wouldn't believe--that their whole country would be destroyed; but would believe that they personally would be destroyed. Like those chain letters never said "Send this along or your city will burn down" they always said "Send this along or you'll get hit by a bus."

Or China has been in Africa. Who do we want to be first exactly? All that stuff has to go down a pipeline here and there, thru Panama, or around "the horn" There's pipelines in western Asia that are already there without any involvment? Damn those Kardashianistans. Crap. Pick a mineral and put it on a train. Get it to market.

Maduro is insane!

In the past couple of weeks he has
- released a video of cartoon chavez going to heaven and meeting historical figures like Simon Bolivar and Che Guevara
- asserted that Chavez possesed a little bird and whistled to him in approval
- claim he's in danger of getting killed by opposing forces aligned with the US
- the curse

If Venezuela elects this bozo, then I say their people are too stupid and rightfully deserve this guy

Well, to be fair, that one's not all that far-fetched considering the United States' past involvements in coups in Central and South America.

How about vice-presidential candidate saying the current president is gonna gitcha (death panels)?  Hell, didn't Bachman (briefly a presidential candidate) go to the House floor just last week saying Obama was going to kill women and children?

QFT!  What career politicians want more than anything is a base of intelligent, informed constituents.  It makes their jobs so much easier when they have to research issues from all sides and give clear, reasoned explanations for their actions.
