Maybe they could start by accepting a non-black artist, and broaden their horizons from there.

People need to learn how to read. Where does Snoop talk about endorsing the state of the rap game regarding how they view gays? He's just giving a realistic analysis of what the genre expects.

Given that he called a whole genre of music "retarded nursery rhymes," I'm pretty sure you already know exactly what he meant by that.

And the push is on for the NFL guys to come out...black dudes are THE most homophobic of all
Good luck with that

Just keepin' it real, he is.  The rap music industry players may accept gays, but rap fandom is the bigger part of "the rap world" and it's heavily homophobic, according to a guy who knows rap fans pretty well.

Snoop was making an observation that I don't think is true, but I get where he is coming from.

The hyper-masculinity of black culture that leads to really dumb violence and homophobia has been around forever, and to be honest I think it's a holdover from a previously disempowered slave culture that puts on this sort of hyper-masculine face as a way to try and make up for having to tap dance just to survive in American culture. At least, I think that is partially the reason.

However, if you look at the rap game, it's not like it was in the '90s. You have lots of liberal rappers, guys like Busdriver for example, that are nothing like the stereotypical '90s gangsta rapper at all. I think Snoop is coming from that perspective, but that perspective is dying quite a bit.

If those are the examples you can come up with, it pretty much proves my point. Why not throw in Snow?  Eminem is very much the exception, and he wasn't even well received in the rap community until he teamed up with Dr. Dre.  Until that point his prime demographic was frat boys and the TRL crowd.

White people dominate nerdcore, and when there are nerdcore shows in my area, I see lots of black folks in line waiting to get in. Black nerds, to be sure, but still.

There are also lots of Latino artists - Puerto Ricans from Fat Joe to Venezuelans like Immortal Technique - that are both non-black AND accepted just fine by the community.

I don't think hip-hop is any more or less inclusive than any other type of music.

Snoop has spoken previously about his support for gay marriage.  He is not  advocating the exclusion of gltb's from rap music, he is only giving a cynical, pragmatic analysis of the state of rap music.

Yes, we may point and laugh at his new moniker, but the man knows the business, and as Smelly McUgly has said better than I can, he has a point about how much saturation is possible among the fandom for equality in gender/sexual orientation.

You're describing fringe elements, not the base or mainstream rap community.

Pop is definitely more inclusive than other types of music.  Country, rap, rock, alternative, punk, heavy metal, whatever else are less inclusive, at least in terms of race.  Rap is probably more inclusive than several other genres when it comes to gender, but it holds no bragging rights racially.  That's not a criticism necessarily, it's just a fact.

Its hard to feel like a bad ass or cool shiat when your talking about rogering another man...

I'mean -- maybe for some you feel pretty groovy about the whole ordeal but for a mass market its a 'hard' sell. heh.

I'mean -- i'm sure you could have gay rap for gay people but the whole genre is sexually charged and you wont ever see a car full of straight guys pull up to a set of traffic lights with a bass pounding song blaring on and on about dicks. It wont happen.

It is the nature of the genre. Rap is inherently masculine (exception for female artists). Snoop is essentially saying that a homosexual will have a hard time being accepted by the rap community and its fans the same way as how a political activist (think the guys from Rage Against the Machine) will have a hard time being accepted by the pop community and its fans.

So therein lies the issue...

Why does male homosexuality negate masculinity?

When we can move beyond the farked up mentality that a homosexual male isn't inherently feminine and a homosexual female isn't inherently masculine (raises red-nail-polished femme gay girl hand), we may just evolve a smidge and expand on an already great musical genre.

Gay/queer rappers exist.  They are on the fringes, but at least we can name a few.

That album is from Murs 3:16. The major label debut was Murs for President. It's got a few awesome songs but I'm pretty on the fence about it. If you like Atmosphere look up the Felt series. Felt is Slug from Atmosphere + Murs with a different producer on each of the three albums (Grouch on album one, Ant on album two, Aesop Rock on album three) Felt 2: A tribute to Lisa Bonet is my favorite of the three.

Murs, Sage Francis, and Tajai are my favorite rappers that I've never gotten the opportunity to see.

Maybe the shiatty mainstream rappers (who ironically make the most effeminate hip-hop) but the underground and alternative scenes are all pretty damn progressive on these kind of issues.

/did someone upthread claim hip-hop hasn't accepted a non-black artist at this point? That wall was broken by the Beastie Boys in the very beginning and the genre is international at this point. Fark is full of ignorant dummies.
