Mmmmmhmmmm. That, and some Patsy Cline or maybe some old school Dolly Parton and you've got yourself a good drinkin' night. My grandfathers generation knew country, this new stuff is crap. Todays country music is too much like modern pop music, I can't tell the difference. Taylor Swift might have a pretty singing voice, but she is NOT country.

/LOVE the old stuff

Ooooh, my bad Mr. Grammar Nazi, I misspelled Georges last name. However, other than that, I'm not off nor wrong by any means.  I've worked for over 34 years on Music Row and later,  down on Broadway where I personally  watched both George and Garth blow out their tunes at Tootsies during the early '80's an well into the late '90's.  I also saw both of them on Open Mic nights at The Blue Bird Cafe, first with George in 1983 and Garth in 1986.  Despite George having cut a record in '81, it was still slow going for him.  The Nashville music community was a good ol' boy mentality back in those days and very cliquey.  George helped pave a way for new talent.  Emmylou Harris, John Prine, even Bill Monroe -who put on a show out in Goodlettesville every Saturday night-, gave George a leg up.  But Garth Brooks? Nope. He was the greedy bunch in the new kids in town.  He didn't want anything but to kiss *ass.  He's never reached back to help anyone but himself.

I don't care if you doubt my credibility.  I know where I stand on my experience with both of them, first-hand and for years on end... in and of themselves.

reklamfox: Taylor Swift might have a pretty singing voice, but she is NOT country.

She thinks of herself as country yet, but that's because to her it's the storytelling that counts more than the sound. To her, country isn't just banjos and fiddles (even if it's that to pretty much everyone else). Soundwise, Taylor's not really any genre in particular. She's game to do pretty much whatever genre she feels she needs to do to get her point across, be it country or folk or pop or Britpop or rap or lullaby or dubstep. In that respect she's getting into the realm of Pink or Beck or Weird Al.

Absolutely.  And she also has a mouth on her that if she walks into a bar sailors come running out.  Seriously. Loves to cuss for shock value.  Guessing that's what you get traveling around all those years at bluegrass festivals with a bunch of guys.  I will say this... from what I've heard the producers really don't do anything to her voice at all on her albums.  She can really sing that well.  She, Martina McBride, and Vince Gill are 3 I can think of off the top of my head that if they were standing right next to you singing they would sound the same as they do on their albums.

And there's also someone else referenced in this thread that has to have a full rack unit of equipment that runs from the mic to the rack, and then to the board.  Not gonna say who, but I personally saw the roll-a-round rack unit in a studio.

From what I've heard about Garth he perceives "Garth Brooks the performer" as a character... sort of like a costume you would put on.  Also know someone who met him when he first started out.  Saw him again 3 years later after he had exploded on the scene and Garth said "Hi John Doe.  Good to see you."  Guy's got a photographic memory.

Part of what the Chris Gaines thing was he shot a movie that has never seen the light of day and virtually  no one will talk about it. I know someone who worked on it.  The plot was Gaines gets murdered and a girl figures out who did it by clues that were hidden in the album. It was finished, but since it was crappy (allegedly) and the album tanked they didn't put out the movie.  I know that the label paid Media Play to make sure that cd was right up front at Christmastime so when you walked in that's what you saw first.  Not sure what to tell you indeedbud.  Never experienced what you're saying... he was always cool to us.

Have a friend who's been in the industry since the 90s and we've had quite a few discussions over artists.  What you may not know about Garth Brooks is what he really did was bring the KISS show experience to country music.  Up to that point country artists hadn't put on the big extravaganzas like what Garth did. Garth was also a big KISS fan as well.  That kind of presentation + country music?  Fans had never ever seen anything like it and GB went gangbusters.  He's made more money than his grandkids could spend so I suspect that's why he's been out of the limelight for so long.  The Las Vegas show begged him to come perform... to the point that they bought a Lear Jet so Brooks could come in, perform, and go back home at his leisure.

I ran into a few backhaul feeds of the show and Taylor seemed like she really didn't want to be there.  Since I'm in the business the last thing I ever want to to is watch award shows so didn't watch it tonight.  Gonna hear about it for the next 2 weeks anyway...

Okay, wait... Nope. He was the greedy bunch in the new kids in town.  He didn't want anything but to kiss *ass.  He's never reached back to help anyone but himself.

I don't care if you doubt my credibility.  I know where I stand on my experience with both of them, first-hand and for years on end... in and of themselves.

First singles---Strait in '81, Brooks in '89. So not a decade apart, but hardly 'came along the same time' (your words). And as for slow going for Strait? Check out his run of singles his first several years.

You really need a new monitor if you can't see them there in that pic.

/calibration works wonders too...

The pic is gone. Doesn't matter; I know what I didn't see.

Commercial pop country is music for people who don't like music.

Tsar_Bomba1: Alison Krauss loves to cuss

I hear she smokes. Do you know if that is true?

She hasn't been the same musically since she got remarried.   But she was amazing for a long time.

Waylon Jennings said it best..."Garth Brooks did for country music what pantyhose did for finger-banging".

Don't know if there's been a genre more formulaic and boring since hair metal.  I say there are three country songs right now.  There's a ballad, a mid-tempo song, and an uptempo song.  All three are swapped around, with each artist getting a different set of lyrics.

Not sure.  Would find it hard to believe she would be able to keep her voice sounding the same if she did.

indeebud: Tsar_Bomba1: indeebud: Okay, wait... You're "in the business" and "the last thing I ever want to to is watch award shows so didn't watch it tonight. Gonna hear about it for the next 2 weeks anyway..." ???? lol Uh huh. So in other words, you have a friend of a friend who works part-time in the business OR you USED to be in the business way back when but like most others, are no longer active in the business so you pretty much carry a monkey/chip on your shoulder and don't watch the award shows because you see old friends still in the business working and you're bitter about that.

Sorry if I come off as a jerk replying to you, but your reply to my post is about as original to me as butter is to bread. People "in the music business" are as common here in Nashville as fake boobs and barfing are to females in L.A.

The reason is I'll end up seeing the show at some point in an editing process. Still in the business as well as my friend. And since you don't appear to be smart like me I'll explain and type real slow so you can get it. The last thing I'm going to do is give out enough information that would:

1. Identify me.
2. Identify any of my other friends in the business.

Can't figure out where your bullshiat snark is coming from. I thought I expressed it enough in my post that I never saw Brooks in that light. I'm not saying it's impossible since you may have seen it, but in my dealings I never saw it. Only thing bad I ever heard about him was the famous story/rumor about the renegotiation of his contract with Jimmy Bowen which involved a dog and a gun... and if you're anybody who's important in this town you know what story I'm talking about.

So I'm sure you've never heard it...

You *really* need a new monitor or computer because the pic is still posted in this thread!

Wasn't there at 9:39 this morning and it's not there now. But again, it's irrelevant as I don't need to see it again.

I'm using Chrome. If you still want to convince me, post it again and circle the stretch mark in question. Or not. Fark I care.
