Is it legal to run from cops who are engaging in police brutality?

Call 911 and tell them you are afraid for your life from these crooked cops and you'd like protective custody from the police in the next country over and drive that way. Seems like it would happen if it were legal.

Jesus farking Christ. When the cop took off after him and chased him into the house my heart farking skipped a beat. After they pulled the guy out of the house, I like how the cop started asking him why did you run from me. My answer would have loudly been "Because you and your buddies were coming to beat my ass".

I hope all of those cops are charged with assault, unlawful restraint, kidnapping and what ever else they can throw at them. And to think that if that guy hadn't been recording them these cops would still be on the job. You would think these assholes would learn by now that there are cameras every where.

You mean the police still didn't have the young man's cellphone after sending about 20 cops into his house to get him?

Fire half of them for brutality and then the other half of them for gross incompetence.

i heard they did get the phone and they destroyed it. i think the stateys were looking for the second phone - but the footage was already uploaded to youtube.

Yeah, this is why I avoid the farking cops unless I have no other option.  They're as likely to fark up the victim or an innocent bystander as they are to actually catch a criminal.

I mean, I don't even go to donut shops.

I was on my moto going to the store, saw a lone young (10ish?) girl walking along the state road. Called the cops and kept my distance watching her. When cops finally arrived I rode up only to see them interrogating what turned out to be a boy with long hair. They were treating him like he was a suspected drug dealer. A 10 year old who thought he could walk to his grandmothers house.

More like two weeks later. The events originally occurred on March 21st. The cell phone that was taken from the man chased into the house has not been 'found', and none of the officers who were at the scence know where it went. Right. I will give the police chief mostly high marks, he didn't gloss over the events, didn't claim his officers were justified, and also didn't knee jerk fire them immediately, he did an investigation and which resulted in the firing of  a total of 4 officers and suspension of others. He also met with community leaders in the 2 weeks between the event and the officers being dismissed and tried to calm things back down. He was mostly successful. There were protests but they were peaceful and orderly, with no new confrontations. The fact that instead of dragging out for months or years a preliminary result was announced within a fairly short time will also help, moving forward.

But the case/story isn't over, and who knows what twists it will take.

A sad condemnation of cops that it is actually surprising a chief investigated use of force and actually took action against those involved.

That is almost unheard of.  The cops generally approve of activity like this.

Also sad is that, as mentioned upthread, this would never have seen the light of day if not for the second video. The blue wall of silence would have scored another win.

Having weapons =! using weapons. Look at poison dart frogs. Nothing tries to eat them because of the consequences, so they lead peaceful lives alongside all manner of serpents and cats that would otherwise enjoy some frog for dinner. That strategy works on people, too. A whole community banding together and having many weapons and pretty soon it's "Forget it Jake, it's Chinatown."

What's the solution, then?  (Not snark, honestly curious.)  They offer pretty good pay and still can't attract higher quality applicants.  You can't just mass-fire your police force, then no one would be out there to catch criminals at all, even at the minimal levels that are upheld now.  If you start holding cops accountable as a mater of course, they'll probably quit, with the same result.  And then there's the politician class.  Local pols are more afraid of police and fire than their national colleague are afraid of evangelicals.  Plus the police provide income from traffic law.

I think we have to find a way to bring up potential cops not to be bullies in the first place.  To make that "Who wants some!  F*CK YEAH!  BRING IT!!  I will KICK your ASS, MAN!!!!!!" attitude unacceptable at any age, from anyone.  To change the way society thinks about power in general.

And that's a much harder row to hoe.

Having been a cop for over 20 years now, it always humors me to see the Fark cop threads where the hate just pours out with a complete lack of knowledge or understanding of what you see or why you are seeing it.  If an officer hits his emergency toner on his radio due to someone resisting arrest, running etc. Every cop that can make that location is going to be there.  They dont get on the radio and ask for details to determine if they should go or not.  If this was some other situation where the cops got no help at all, you would be biatching about how lazy they were.  Shut the fark up until you actually know what you are talking about.

Yes, but with the current attitudes in law enforcement, that's more likely to add up to a shoot-out than the police giving up.  Giving up would signal weakness and that's completely counter to the psychology being demonstrated in these types of incidents.

So tell me, who in that video resisted arrest? Was it the guy who was thrown to the ground and getting his ass beat? Was it the guy who was asking why they were kicking the guy's ass? And why did the cop need to chase the other guy into the house? Please explain these things to me.

LOL - I saw that, too.

Frankly, when citizens routinely fear the incompetence or malice of any city employee, they have Every Farking Right to complain.

I call the police only when I must - to report a crime, or perhaps I would if my life were in danger and I had no other option.  There are enough of these types of stories being reported that they are no longer an oddity, an exception, a "rogue cop".  They are, sadly, normal.

My assumption is that the police are about as likely to shoot me as they are to shoot the person endangering my life.  The difference between being a police officer and being a private citizen, though, is that police officers are allowed to act this way, are given time off, and have every excuse made for them by their colleagues (who should be investigating their crime) and the justice system... and private citizens go to jail.
