Which is funny, because when they started that cop drama I had a brief flicker of hope it'd be Fury and his Howling Spy Unit...

Oh I see how it is... They let this piece of crap on TV, but they cancel Firefly????????????

*grumbles*  Assmonkey, jerk off, farking bastards from HELL!!!!

I'M FINE!
Why? Why? did they have to kill Wash off??? They could have come back.  Now, Mal took a job as some kind of writer. Zoe is trying to hide from the Alliance as someone called Jessica Pearson. Inara turned into an alien.  Jayne, is pretty much still Jayne but his name was changed to protect his true identity. Kaylee got married and barely writes home anymore.  River totally freaked out and became some kind of cyborg and her brother quit being a doctor so he could have kids with his wife, Paul.
I'll be over in the corner weeping.

Groan.

The synopsis makes this sound like it's going to be Buffy/Firefly on Marvel Cinematic Earth. It has all Whedon's usual archetypes. I bet they'll all talk like him, too. They will hang around and banter half the time, throwing in pop culture references and practically winking at the camera every time they tell an in-joke.

I REALLY hope there are some smart people at Marvel Studios who realize that it's okay to say "no" to Joss Whedon every once in a while. He's great, but like George Lucas, he's only great when he has people around him who are capable of saying, "Uhh... That's not such a great idea."

I loved The Avengers. That's the kind of Whedon we need. We do not need him to rehash the same shows again. It seems like so many of his projects have the same vibe-- the same group, the same conversations, the same circumstances but in a different setting-- and I really want to see S.H.I.E.L.D. succeed, unlike Firefly. I really don't want the S.H.I.E.L.D. gang to go all adolescent on me, and start calling villains "the big bad".

This is why I think Whedon should have been given a RUNAWAYS show, instead of a S.H.I.E.L.D. -- With the Runaways, his TV style is PERFECT. With S.H.I.E.L.D. it's going to be the wrong feeling if he sticks with his usual bag of tricks.

I'd watch the hell out of a Whedon Runaways show. I'm wary about a Whedon S.H.I.E.L.D. show.

Have there been any spoilers yet about how Agent Coulson is leading this team?  Life Model Decoy?  I know there's probably plenty of other possible excuses available.

And am I right in thinking that due to the film rights of X-Men, mutant powers are off the table?

Yup, anything mutant-related, spiderman-related, fantastic four-related, (probably) ghost rider-related, and a few other ones are off the table.  Hmm... I guess that probably also includes Blade, Punisher... I'm sure there are more that have the rights sold off on lease but haven't actually had anything made yet.  Personally, I think the X-Men license is too broad with including any x-factor/mutant gene content, but them's the breaks.

Personally, I think that they're either going to go LMD or just plain "Nick Fury Lies".

I do hope that they use the show to work in a few "fringe" characters that could fit into the power-level they're going for.

Interesting question. Mutant powers would be a useful plot device to the writers, even if unrelated to Coulson.

As far as Coulson goes, it could be a far simpler explanation. Like a medical/healing device being part of Phase 2 along with the spiffy alien blasters.

This is what they show to advertisers, who are terrible sub-human dregs. The real show is probably a lot better. Besides, great TV shows have terrible pitch/taglines.

I don't know how you could pull it off, but a cop procedural show that slowly turned into a comic-book-esque action series over the course of a few seasons would be interesting.

Him personally? Nothing. My heart went out to him with what he went through with his son; that's unimaginably wrenching, especially as a parent. No, it's the quality of his work I have problems with.

My immediate thought was that he turned out to be a toxic element in both Heroes and Smallville, doing damage that others had to try to overcome. The former show never recovered from it.

As you mentioned the over-hyped The Long Halloween, well, I suppose I've essentially said it right there. I've read it and cannot understand why it merited praise.

That you had to reach down to the level of Commando for a writing credit isn't a shining recommendation, though it's a better move than citing Teen Wolf and Teen Wolf 2.

Different strokes and all that, but Loeb's attachment to anything I have an interest in doesn't brighten my day.

Not sure if it's a spoiler but they're hedging their bets. His only interaction with the team, at least at the start, is via video. So is he alive or an uploaded brain pattern like Max Headroom? Tune in to find out.

The WGA strike killed "Heroes." Executive meddling killed "Heroes." By the end of the third season, none of the writers knew which plot points were still valid and which ones had been nixed. It was like the goddamn "Clone Saga" all over again.

Let me flip it around: I've never seen evidence that a project was improved by Jeph Loeb's involvement. Instead, I mainly read comics he wrote and noted that I didn't enjoy them, and saw his name involved in shows that started to go nowhere or to bad places.

I think the only thing he's ever done that made me happy (to hear about) was Ultimatum over in the Ultimates, and that was only because I heard it cited many times as the jumping off point for people when it came to the Ultimates universe. (I've disliked the Ultimates line pretty much from the start -- or, at least, once it moved past Quesada's roll back the clock move with Peter Parker; I didn't agree with Quesada on the point, but I at least understood what bothered him and what he wanted to do.)

Summer Glau doesn't cause shows to get canceled, she just gets casted in sci-fi shows and sci-fi shows are notoriously bad at staying on TV.

If I'm not mistaken, Marvel Studios got Blade and The Punisher back recently. I'm not 100% certain about which of the two they have, or if it's both, but they've been trying to snap up their film rights for Marvel characters where they can, and since there hasn't been a Blade movie in many years, and the last Punisher flick bombed, I believe they were both back on the table for Marvel to take.

Unfortunately, the shiatty contract for Spider-Man that they pounded out while going bankrupt gave Sony the film rights to Spidey  in perpetuity  as long as they make a Spider-Man movie ever so-many years (seven, I think). They're never getting Spider-Man back.

The X-Men have been so mangled that I think it's a good thing they're not part of Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity. It's nice to have a Marvel universe  without  fricking mutants.

The MAJOR loss, aside from Spidey, is the Fantastic Four. They're very important to Marvel mythos, as are many of the characters that go with their package, such as Doctor Doom and Galactus. Losing these characters simply sucks, and the contract is similar to the Spider-Man one. They're not getting the FF back unless Fox wants to let them go--- And Fox doesn't want to let them go.

So what did they do at Marvel? They made Tony Stark the biggest brain in that world, since they didn't have Reed Richards or Hank McCoy. They do have Hank Pym, but it remains to be seen how smart his Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart is (I hope smart enough to create Ultron).

I think that world still needs a "first family" of superheroes. If they can't have the Fantastic Four, then why not take advantage of the fact that Hank and Janet aren't Avengers by making them the Reed and Sue of the Cinematic Universe? Add in an elemental hero (Firestar? Toro? Crystal?) and a strong hero (Mettle? She-Hulk? Red Hulk? Skaar? Hercules? Namor?), and you've got a great replacement team. You can't call them the Fantastic Four, but you could probably get away with calling them the Future Foundation.

Or maybe just make a grown-up version of Power Pack, but make Alex a genius.

Either way, there's a lot of room to move. I'd love to see them do something here.

ZeroCorpse: Power Pack

Ugh.  Anything but Power Pack.  At first, I thought that you were talking New Warriors and was thinking Speedball; that had me going down a whole dark turn of giggles.

I still think that they should go the LMD route, because that would open up a new route of plot.

There's a whole list of names that I've been waiting to have dropped on background characters.  For instance, I had hoped that the above Maria Hill was actually going to be named Carol Danvers.  A background agent in the show named Aaron Stack would make my day.  There's a host of characters that they could introduce pre-origin (or would this then technically be their origin?) if only to gauge viewer interest for the future.  Why risk going through a whole origin on a character when you could instead tease them into the background and see which ones are going to be desired for more?

Well he was a bit restrained in Avengers although, and I'm not complaining, I noticed Black Widow got a lot of screen time. And I'm fine with a Maria Hill led group saving the world weekly. Getting in a stable of writers and Joss just doing the producer thing though probably would be best and let him concentrate on making a kick ass Avengers 2.
