lamric: Cropped pictures, an unnamed company, no mention of a specific location and an opening salvo that refers to a "...money-spinning palm oil plantation" makes me think this isn't a news article, its an editorial.

Click-bait. Not quite the same thing, but definitely has some things in common. Mostly, plays upon the emotions without a real interest in facts.

If you need/want palm oil, specify African Red Palm Oil, in Africa the Oil Palm is a native species.

(I buy African RPO for our (Canadian-born) African Grey Parrots; part of their ancestors' natural diet.)

Generation_D: Langdon_777: Ambivalence: Langdon_777: It is surprisingly hard to avoid eating the palm oil too - it seems to be in sooo many easily eaten products.

About time a product maker or ten set themselves apart and chose not to use this unfriendly oil.

Palm makes an incredible ammount of oil per acre which is why it's such a popular tropical crop.  But when there's money to be made there's no room for things like nature.

True :(

I would still pay more for a product with a friendly cartoon orangutang on it that was palm oil free.

Tropical islands covered with glorious rainforests, with millions of people on, are probably not the best place to have intensive agriculture (waay better to have top dollar, organic or hand picked from the wild hard to get produce ... bit like orangutangs are for the tourist dollar - they make millions out of that, alas some other bastard with the right connections wants to make millions out of palm oil).  Now sweat shops is where it is at, much smaller land area needed ;)

How about a nice friendly orangutan on the box, and they rename Palm Kernel Oil to its chemical compound name(s) instead? That way you get to feel good, and the company gets to keep exploiting while charging you more for your blind devotion to facile solutions.

Kind of how 20 years ago all the shampoos quit listing "Animal Collagen" as an ingredient, and instead went with breaking collagen down into chemical components. Was remarkable. Overnight everyone stopped using animal colligen. I think they even got to put a sticker on the package.

So by your thinking it really is just a rush to the bottom.

Unlike many, I live a pretty basic uncomplicated life and hence have the time and inclination to know about the things I buy and how they are sourced - I have never fallen for the 'gelatin' thing :p

Better to burn up than fade away hey? ;)

Yes cause those humans on earth living "basic, uncomplicated" lives are are definitely the ones posting to Frak. Not the Australian aborigines, or the Inuit, or the uncontacted Amazon tribes. It's you. You are the type specimen of the basic, uncomplicated homo sapiens. Totally.

You're directly related to the bacteria you kill when you use hand sanitizer. Is this any different? Every living thing is related by blood. If you value the lives of orangutans because they're closely related to you, then how can you disregard other humans, who are undeniably more closely related? Many more humans suffer than orangutans. So why give a crap about them?

Instead of harming innocent apes, couldn't we just kick all the rednecks and hicks out of Florida and use that land for palm oil production, instead? The world has more than enough rednecks, and frankly, orangutans are a bit higher on the evolutionary ladder than the vast majority of rednecks and hicks.

Besides, all those people will be happy to go to Arizona or Montana.

I got to use that the other day. A guy at work was making fun of my walmart PT sweatpants. He couldn't come back from that, and I looked really smart. Thanks xkcd!

I have no sympathy for idiots who build their house at places that would be destroyed. Why cant these apes build their home somewhere else where humans wouldnt cut them down?

If the cameras weren't there those apes would be orange smears on the forest floor.

As long as eco-warriors keep insisting orangs and chimps make bad pets and shouldn't be in Hollywood, they're going to go extinct.

Chimps in Hollywood= $40,000.
Chimps in Uganda = $2.00 a lb.

Ohlookabutterfly: xcv: nocturnal001: Palm oil is terribly unhealthy.

I'm an enviornmentalist but I find that we very much have a have your cake and eat it too mentality when it comes to developing nations. They want progress too.

They do tend to be shortsighted when it comes to their environment but that puts the onus on us to educate the dumb shiats.

/pissing off environment haters and the environment lovers in one fell swoop
//these issues are very complicated

We're just as shortsighted in the West. We want cheap labor from immigration with zero consideration for the carbon footprint increase of a person that went from riding on top of a minibus and living in a sustainable village in some developing country to owning 2 gas-guzzling used cars and trucks in an open  land-consuming, heavily paved housing development with high energy demands.

So it's OK for us in the west to have the nice lifestyle but not for those in developing countries? I'm sure that is not what you meant but that's how it reads.

Also, I will now look into how much palm oil I am eating, how unhealthy it is for my fat ass, and if I can decrease my intake or substitute it for canola oil which is made here in my country.

Canola is the way to go, or olive. That is even better.

I think these nations are better of in the long run if they do not destroy their environment. In the west we have worked hard to understand this. Our impact on foreign environments due to our lifestyle is usually ignored.

This upsets me terribly. Why don't people see things like this and realize what they are doing is so very wrong?

If there was any justice in this world, then global warming would be a real phenomenon, perpetrated by the Atlanteans trying to flood humans off the planet. In a hundred years, the last homo sapiens will be found perched atop Mount Everest, now mere hundreds of feet above the surface of the new global ocean, then pushed over into the bottomless waters.

That's why programs like REDD exist, to try and provide incentives for developing nations to stop deforesting while still being able to benefit economically from doing so.  Unfortunately it hasn't been implemented very well so far, but the little conundrum you brought up certainly hasn't escaped notice and people are at least attempting to address it.

In the meantime, though, this palm oil stuff is terrible.  It is in SO MANY products, from popcorn to shampoo (often NOT obviously labeled in the ingredients), and the amount of deforestation it is prompting is an absolute ecological disaster.  Such a sad story, this one.

Most palm oil isn't even consumed.  There are many names for it, and it is used in a multitude of products,
This site has a list of things to look for on ingredient lists (I doubt it is exhaustive), including things like "glyceryl stearate" and "sodium lauryl sulphate".  Sadly it is really difficult for even an aware consumer to avoid every kind of palm oil product, which is why this problem might be best addressed with legislative measures to discourage the use of palm oil or, more broadly, to disincentivise deforestation.
