I imagine that living in that underwater hotel room would lose a lot of appeal, really quickly. Water gets dirty and gross, and that's without the inevitable garbage that will get dumped into whatever seafloor you're on. Plus, imagine how difficult it would be to sleep during a storm.

Depends on how close to shore, I think. There's accounts of people surviving tsunamis while snorkeling, not even noticing much of a difference until they go back and see the devastation. But if my understanding is correct, that only really works if you're far away from shore. I would assume the underwater hotel room/apartment is attached to some other building for power/sewage/etc, so I'd assume that it's close enough to shore that you'll get to see (and perhaps feel) the effects of storms on the shore.

Oh really? I found most of them pretty basic and routine. The underwater bed one was interesting because it was underwater not that it was anything special in the interior. And I'm sorry that cabin was more a dorm room that anything. I would not call that an unparalleled achievement in interior design. The locations were the best parts about most of these.

The locations are probably what they meant, but yeah, overall the interior design aspects really weren't all that special (the underwater one would be WICKED cool, though).

Honestly can't say I'd be all that comfortable living in most of those spots though.  What is it about most interior design that, to me, just seems cold, clinical, uninviting and merely for display (which to my pragmatic mind is a waste of time, money and space)?  If I'm going to live in one of those places, it needs to be warm, inviting, comfortable - I want my place to look like you can walk in, sit down and chill out, not come in only if invited, no food, no drinks, no breathing and you have to sit completely upright and stiff as a board with you hands in your lap and touch NOTHING.  The concept of display rooms works if it's a museum or you and everyone you know has a high and mighty stick up their arses, but in the real world, it just doesn't work.

My brother looked up that listing because he's in real estate and he browses.  It's going for 6 million.  Based on the size it should be going for three times that, so it must be in a pretty shiatty part of Brooklyn.

It went for ~25 million a few years ago.

It's not actually - it's at the end of the Manhattan Bridge in a great location with spectacular views. It has been used in a number of movies (including "Pope of Greenwich Village") and recently came on the market (past couple of years).  It is a place most people in NYC I think always wonder about.  It is in Brooklyn, so the prices still aren't anywhere near Manhattan prices, it came on the market at a bad time. and, frankly, it isn't huge , and is kind of awkwardly laid-out.  It isn't worth more than its selling price which, for Brooklyn, is still extremely high.

The tree house in Costa Rica is the best of the lot and not just because we love CR. Open air living, if the climate is right, is amazing.

I stay in the Sistine Chapel when I'm there, which isn't often. Other weekends I loan it out to the Catholics

to me the perfect living space is one that has me doing what i like almost the moment i leave my home. maybe i like to hunt and fish or shop at the most glamorous shops in the world, enjoy a sport like golf  or skiing and have a home at a world class course, be surrounded by museums and theaters, etc...
so its 10% omg this is a beautiful house and 90% i'm in the middle of some of the best ......... in the world.

Subby must be getting a nice check from The Zermatt Tourism Board for this.

Good lord, some of those places are gorgeous, but you probably have to pay + $10 million to buy them, then drop another +$10 million to pay for a year's worth of cleaning service, property taxes and utilities.

This is good enough for me.

This bathroom in NYC is for sale if anybody is looking. It even comes with a whole building wrapped around it.

Other than the one in Brooklyn, none of those are actual places to live. They're all resorts or hotels and most are relatively affordable. Heck the greenhouse in Costa Rica caters to backpackers, part of the Schick is that you have to hike to get there.

I was looking up accommodation for a snow holiday in Courchevel in France a few weeks ago, one of the apartments, which wasn't a patch on any of those Zermatt chalets, was €66k for a 5 days.  They're all rented out by super rich Russian oligarchs.

The Brooklyn Clock Tower Condo didn't go for $25M a few years ago, which is why it's on the market for $18M now. Or, you can rent it for $50,000/month.

DUMBO is a former (and current) industrial area: while it's become popular over the past 15 years or so as a place for artists and tech startups, as a residential neighborhood it's almost completely lacking in amenities, unless you count dirty cobblestone streets and proximity to the recycling substation.
