Do me proud and don't eat deep dish pizza. Go to the South Side and get a thin crust like a non-tourist.

Beggars is genuinely awful pizza.  If you want that sort of pizza at least go to Waldo Cooney's.

I will be in town for a training seminar. I will be out by O'Hare. I won't have time for much sightseeing and such. But I am staying an extra night so I will have 2 days to do some fun stuff. I hope to go to the Museum of Science and Industry and Adler Planetarium. Maybe Buddy Guy's too. But I have nothing set in stone.

I figured I would try a dog and a deep dish. I didn't know there was a thin crust / deep dish divide. I have enjoyed both. I will be there a week so I hope to try a couple of the other suggestions as well.

I'll admit that I doubt I will wait in line for over an hour. Is it always that bad? Or just around meal times?

Someone I know said I should seek out Superdawgs. Any thoughts?

Took my first trip to Chicago too subby just last week.  What an awesome city.  Did Portillo's for the dogs.  They were good but not amazing.  On the advice of some locals we did go to Lou Malnati's for pizza and got the classic (sausage, extra cheese, and butter crust).  I'm normally a thin crust guy and usually hate extra cheese but I figured, when in Rome.  Best decision ever, and my new favorite pizza too.  I've been dreaming about it all week and my mouth is watering as I type this.

I stayed out by O'Hare about 18 months ago. Several of us (from all over) ate pizza at a Giordano's not far from the Rosemont CTA. Something about it was dissapointing, but I don't remember exactly what.

The fist time I went to Chicago someone suggested I go try Lou Manatti's pizza, and I was like "WTF? Why would anyone name a pizza joint after the Illumanati? Does it have a conspiracy theme?"

So there's this one forum devoted to food in Chicago and other places (which I learned about thanks to farker exvaxman), and they've published a handy list of recommended restaurants all across Chicagoland.

Here is a handy link to the list in the form of an annotated Google map. Please be aware that Chicago is not always the easiest town to get from point A to point B in a hurry; depending on the time of day, day of the week, road construction etc. a place you're dying to try might be a two hour drive away from where you actually are. It's probably best to use the map to find a place that's close.

Also be aware that there's other pizza in that town besides that deep dish stuff. There are a few good 'real' pizza places on that list, if I'm not mistaken. (BTW here's a link to the list in the form of an .xls spreadsheet.)

Divide isn't really the right word. There are just two styles. Chicago thin crust is its own style, different from New York or Neapolitan or whatever else. Some people say only tourists eat deep dish but they are unfathomably wrong. There are plenty of places out in the neighborhoods where tourists never go that serve lots of deep dish. Chicago thin crust is a lot like Chicago hot dogs. They are more informal, cheaper, meals usually served out of tiny restaurants that don't have any seating but aren't really fast food.

Lou Malnati's is a good deep dish place and has locations close to both downtown and somewhat near to O'hare (at least, nearer than going into the city). You could also try Art of Pizza if you want to get outside of downtown.

For Chicago style thin crust I suggest Pizano's. It also has a few locations and is pretty much the Chicago classic. Yes, it serves deep dish too. One thing to note is that most places don't serve by the slice. If you buy one you're getting a whole pizza. So you need to separate out your thin and deep dish pizza eating.

Hot Doug's is always busy because they are only open for lunch. Also they really specialize in exotic sausages but they do a good Chicago style as well. If you go there you can actually phone in your order to circumvent the line. You can also go to one of the many Portillo's locations just to experience the style. You also can't go wrong with Superdawg's but they are kind of far from other places you may be going.

Since you're a Farker you are probably also interested in beer. You should go to one of the Goose Island restaurants to eat and drink local Chicago beer. If you're going up north to Superdawg's you should also definitely go to the Half Acre taproom. They don't serve food but they let you bring your own food in.
