Ahh, s/he has derp eyes!
I'll drop the / from s/he when s/he's known for more than a year.  I was pretty sure I was a man, a dolphin, a woman, a forklift, and more born in a man's body when I was 18.

The article says that this person just figured it out this year. Now I'm a pretty open minded guy, but I don't think you should call yourself trans if you haven't even started reassignment therapy. I got the impression that this person was going to dress like a woman for prom, but still present as a man during school. If that's the case, then that would mean he's a drag queen, not that she's transgender.

19? High school? Did Tony do high school wrong? Is that normal?

Oh no! I called her "him"! I better stop before she does something stupid.

That's a good point.  He should tailor his decisions and identity more to match your opinion of his appearance.

From what I've been told, transgender types 'think' different from the sex they're assigned at human spawning.

They feel uncomfy so they feel the need to alter their bodies because they know better than nature.

I'm ok with that, because humans should be allowed to do whatever to themselves. But school life isn't fair, soooooo...

You're not trolling, just ignorant.  People a hell of a lot smarter than you are have confirmed that there is a psychological component to gender.

Or, you know, we could just stop caring what types of clothes are suitable for what gender.  So someone wants to wear a dress, big whoop.

I'd think there'd be more a societal interest than a psychological one.

Because People in power are Stupid: How does he know that he's transgendered?

Easy- so easy, in fact, anyone sitting at their computer can do it RIGHT NOW!

First, ask yourself:  Am I (a) male or (b) female?  Hold that answer in your head.

Now here is where it gets tricky- open your pants or lift your dress, and check your genitalia.  Do you have (a) a penis or (b) a vagina?  Look closely and make sure you're right.  Hold that answer in your head.

Now, compare your answers to these two questions.  Did you answer both with (a) or both with (b)?  Congratulations, you are a part of that mighty fraternity/sorority of cisgendered people that has existed since the dawn of the ages!

But what if your answers differ?  Well that's just fine too- you're awesomely transgendered!  While your fraternity or sorority might not be as massive, they are there to welcome you with open arms for strength and solidarity.  And while organized transperson support groups may be a relatively new thing, know that the condition of your being has been around just as long as being cis.

But remember that no matter what your answer is, there are those of us out there who love, cherish, and accept you without condition, for your genitals are far less important to us than your hearts.

=)

I'd say that a professional would be better at making that statement than a person.

Would you trust a person's self diagnosis of an ailment?

Most people are grossly uneducated and prefer to use 'feelings' instead of analytical thinking.

megarian: 19? High school? Did Tony do high school wrong? Is that normal?

Depending on your birthday it could be normal. All so there is a school of thought that boys shouldn't start school until they are six for maturity reasons.

Some (and this is really messed up) admit their boys later so they will be older and bigger than their classmates. This is so they will have an advantage in sports.

...can I do a hands-on check of my genitalia instead of just a visual check?

Sounds suspect to me.  A couple months with a self diagnosis.

I don't care however, as to the article.  Let people wear what they want.

Wearing a dress to a prom isn't a right. It's a privilege, like voting.

Newsflash for you: Not all transgendered people WANT to change their bodies, they just don't feel "right" in them. For example, I'm a female body that wants to be a hermaphrodite. You really think there's a psychologist that would write me off for reassignment surgery or hormones? Not that I know of. Plus, transititioning would mean losing my relationship with my fiancé, and that's not something I'm willing to sacrifice. I'm perfectly happy with the parts I have, will never be totally happy with my body, but, eh, whatever, I can deal with it. I don't need perfection. I express my gender in other ways, through my appearance and behaviour (and again, fortunately my fiancé is supportive; my community, not so much).

Try stepping outside your little box of experience and realize that different people are. . . different! I didn't figure out I was bi until I was 17 (by contrast, my parents knew when I was 11), and realizing I was "transgendered" didn't come until 26 or so. I always knew I was different, and had a male alter ego as a child, but didn't adopt the label until I felt comfortable with it. Bisexuality was a lot easier to come to terms with than my gender.

It's like having a disease all your life, but not knowing what it's called until you're an adult. (Not saying LGBTQRSTUV is a disease, just noting the similarity in perspective) You've always known something was off, you just couldn't put a name to it.

Oh boy, it's our weely transphobia/minute of hate for transgendered people thread!

TheZorker: You check your Birth Certificate?

/Gender is Physical, not Psychological
//I'm not sure if I'm Trolling

Uh, yeah, you're either trolling or completely ignorant.

Gender has nothing to do with biological sex. You can be a biological male, and develop the brain chemistry and physiology of female. This is also not a new thing. It's been floating around since the late 80s.

2013-04-06 01:02:00 PM

To those of you that have an issue with the person figuring out they are Transgendered within the past few months: fark. You.

I didn't know I was transgendered until I was 31.

Like someone said (better) earlier: Better to know late than be miserable your whole life not knowing (or being able to come out of the closet) who you TRULY are.
