Seattle's vision of an urban food oasis is going forward. A seven-acre plot of land in the city's Beacon Hill neighborhood will be planted with hundreds of different kinds of edibles: walnut and chestnut trees

Neat, right next to the homeless encampments set up in the Beacon Hill greenbelt. Creating wild growing food will be great to attract more feral human populations.

It will be a race to see what shuts it down first - your description, or the inevitable lawsuit(s) over the food making someone sick.

onyxruby: Deer are very much a problem and I'm limited in what I can do about them.

Kill them, dance your victory dance, eat your enemy, feed and add their power to your own.

Louisiana_Sitar_Club: So who gets to decide what sort of pest control measures are employed, if any?  I am positive that there will be no disagreements over this point.  I am also confident that it will be entirely feasible to monitor all plants at all times to ensure that antisocial nut jobs will never tamper with the food.  It is also a sure deal that everyone will feel as though everyone else is limiting their harvest to their own "fair share".  This is gonna be great.

We do have "Pea patches" (Urban Tilth) scattered around in vacant lots or corner lots, people seem to not vandalize those, other than the occasional drunk that stomps through or something. I see people tending to them nearly every day. there's a waiting list to get a plot, too.

So taking that one step further, its conceivable a public park could grow food to feed people, at least for a while, til word got out there's free food in the park.

As for attacking people sociopathically, out here its just a lot more simple to buy a truckload of guns at a gun show with no background check, load up on ammo and shoot up a coffee house or after hours party. Thats the preferred sociopath outlet. Or go strangle a hooker and leave her dead in an isolated riverbank. We get a socially inept red stater who moved to the big city to find his fortune or find love, and he winds up being ostracized as the pushy right wing dipsh*t that he truly is, and to get even he shoots up a room full of innocent bystanders. Its happened twice in recent years. Same MO, the damn small town he came from always knew he was a nice quiet guy who would never harm anyone, then you mix him into the stress of having a career and a personality that fits a west coast city, and he cracks. Now Kids, Now.

I think this is a really cool idea.  I'm willing to forgo the usual FarkSnark and hope this works.

Would that be "hand tossed" trail mix?
