He got sent to jail because the IRS kept telling him, for years, that he had to pay his taxes.  He didn't just forget to fill out a few forms, he deliberately engaged in fraud to avoid paying taxes.  He declared himself a "non-resident alien" of the US and as such he didn't have to pay taxes.  He didn't file tax returns for five years even though he earned quite a lot of income each of those years.

What's truly stupid is that the government approached Snipes before he was indicted to try and work out a plan to sort out his back taxes, and Snipes rebuffed the offer.  Snipes went to jail because he did everything short of shiatting on the judge's desk during the investigation and trial.

Well, that sucks for him. I really don't know much about the situation, but I thought he was being a dick about it and claiming he shouldn't have to pay. I might be wrong about that, but if he tried to settle, I don't believe he should have served any time in prison.

Oh, he was being a dick.  The government tried to settle with him before he was even indicted, and he told them to fark off.  Then he was a jackass during the entire case, demanding that the government "prove" that he had to pay taxes since he declared himself a non-resident alien living in the US.  Once it became readily apparent that his defense wasn't working, THEN he tried to settle.  At that point, it was too late.

Prosecutors offered him a deal early, he said no, then he did a "fark you" dance for a year while the case proceeded, then at the very, very, VERY end he tried to settle, but at that point the prosecutors weren't having any of it.  You do not have a right to a plea bargain.

I met Snipes at San Diego Comic Con in 2010. This was shortly before he went to prison. He was there promoting some comic book or other. Some vanity project he had stuck his name on, I forget what it was. The signing was only scheduled for an hour but he had an absolutely huge line of fans waiting. He stayed and signed for everyone (well, at least until it got to me, I stopped caring after that). He was talking and joking with everybody which only made the signing go on longer but it seemed like he was having a great time. He's still a dumbass for not filing his taxes but he was great with his fans.

/On the flip side I remember seeing Gene Simmons at a similar Comic Con promotional signing and it looked like it caused him physical pain every time he had to sign something and not get cash for it.
