I had a sociology prof live in a shiatty part of Chicago for a year(I believe in the late 80's) to do research.  He hung himself the year after I had his class(1997.)

Not sure if it were me or the crappy environment he endured that made him off himself.

Though an official cause of death has yet to be released, friends of 26-year-old Lee Halpin believed he froze to death. There's no proof he froze to death only speculation.

Yeah they said it was "well below 0 C" but unless they mean WAY below freezing, that's suspicious.  He must have been drastically unprepared---a good winter coat and protection from the wind (which he had in that building) should have been enough to keep him alive, especially if it was getting above freezing during the day.  Maybe he wouldn't be comfortable, but the upper-20s F with no wind chill is hardly lethal.

2013-04-05 04:57:17 PM
Wow, he experienced something a journalist going to cover war stories go through, the possibility of getting killed on the job:(

The way he died, if he really did freeze to death, simply sucks. Imagine working hard and trying to get your dream job as a kid to an adult, only to have everything ended by something that could have been avoided.

2013-04-05 04:57:41 PM
It's not the survival of the sensitive. It's the survival of the fittest.

What people don't realize is you either get smart (get out of the cold, find protection, build a fire or move to the food) or you die (or if you're lucky get medical care and social services).

Either way, after a while, nature figures out who is tough enough to be shiat on constantly.

/at least he died knowing just how rough it is on the homeless, the mentally ill, and others who are out there alone
/You think you're poor? Try saving one kleenex you've stolen from somewhere for a couple of days, then go out in the middle of the night on a dirt road by the railroad tracks in a violent major city, take a liquidy poop that you've been working on for couple of days, and try to wipe yourself clean with that single kleenex. Be sure and poke the used kleenex into your pile of excreta, like the ribbon on Hershey's Kiss. Oh and no soap or wipes for your hands either. That's poor. It's also alcoholic or mentally ill or a few other things.

2013-04-05 04:57:48 PM

This is correct. In my twenties I slept in snow many times in a sleeping bag while camping. No wind, and you're dry, it's not bad at all. An unheated building would have been luxury.

He had a sleeping bag. He was in a building. I really don't believe this story.

Silly wannabe, you can't decide to be a true connoisseur of hobo life, just like that.  You have to work up to it.  Start small, maybe with a bit of PTSD and substance abuse, and then gently move onto screaming bouts at random strangers and masturbation on public transport or in libraries.  Only once you've mastered those can you brave -20 degree nights with just smelly newspaper insulation and strained sterno to drink.  The lifestyle will take a lot out of you, if you don't work your way into it carefully.

Two men arrested following death of young filmmakerTwo men have been arrested in connection with the death of a young filmmaker who was sleeping rough as part of a documentary he was making about homelessness.
Lee Halpin, 26, had decided to spend the week living on the streets in his home city of Newcastle to experience what it was like to be homeless.
Northumbria Police say they have now arrested two men, aged 26 and 30, on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug.
The police said the men have been bailed pending further inquiries.

I'm sure there are plenty of worthy causes that the general public needs to be made aware of.  Homelessness is not one of them.  We are all already aware of what it means to be homeless.  The only "ultimate sacrifice" this guy made was due to his own poor judgement and ignorance.

Could also have been one of those crappy "my kid needs this to sleep over at their friend's house" type sleeping bags, not rated for cold

Could have been other factors too, you can get hypothermia rather easily, it doesn't require literally turning into an icicle, particularly with some underlying medical conditions

It is NOT known if he had a sleeping bag. He only tweeted that he needed one. That said, he could have been beaten up for the sleeping bag or his camcorder. But just as likely, he could have been weakened or poisoned by bad food since he said he was going to try scrounging for food, weakened enough to die of cold. Anyway, Darwin award deserved for ignomious way of removing himself from the gene pool.

I've been homeless before and speaking from experience you have to be really farking stupid or an addict to die on the street. There are just to many resources and places to go to for help.

blinkybluegnome: A filmmaker playing homeless, and no 'Sullivan's Travels' reference?

I am disappoint.

What an awful movie.  Made me glad the guy was dead.

And the first thing I thought of on reading this story.

Journalist and filmmaker  Unemployed  guy who immersed himself in homelessness for story research strays just a little too far into method-acting territory  makes it to day three of his week long heroin bender.

It doesn't take much to die of hypothermia, naysayers and conspiracy theorists. All it takes is for one unprepared person to fall asleep in temperatures he's unused to, and for his core temperature to drop below 85 degrees. That's it. If he was underdressed and hadn't eaten enough the day before--a very common occurrence for the homeless--and the room he was in was too large or drafty to contain his body heat, then that's about all it would take.

What likely happened is that he curled up in a corner and shivered until his used up his calorie reserves and fell asleep; meanwhile, he was getting colder and didn't realize it. Lacking either a sleeping bag or a box or something to retain his own heat, he'd have continued to lose body heat till his core temperature dropped. This makes it more difficult for him to wake up. If he'd woken up, he might have lived; but what probably happened is that he slept past the danger point of his body temperature hitting 85 degrees; after that, his heart would have gone into defibrillation and he'd have died.

He didn't "freeze to death" in the same way someone caught in the snow freezes to death; basically, he cooled to death. If he'd eaten more or had something warm to drink that night, he might have lived even in colder temperatures; but he didn't. Or if he'd known to stay out of that drafty building and keep moving through the night and sleep the next day; but he didn't. Or slept in a box or under a stairwell or any of the other things homeless people do to stay marginally warmer. He did not, and so he died.

Good for him!
Hope he gets some kind of OWS Oscar award for his sacrifice.
No I mean that sincerely.

IBelieveYouHaveMyStapler: This needs to go full circle with his family suing Channel 4 for causing him to do this as part of a job application.

I cannot even begin to imagine the mental back flips necessary for a rational person to arrive at this conclusion.

Pretty much this. People can die of hypothermia on a warm summer day if they get careless, like trying to take a nap while floating in the ocean without realizing that the water doesn't have to be freezing to kill you, just a lower temperature than 85 degrees and be present in large enough quantities that it drains your body heat away until your core temperature is the same.

If you're not used to sleeping rough, a little whiskey, a little light rain, and -4C can kill even the fittest young man.

The irony of global warming, carbon tax measures increase the cost to heat a home and lead to those on fixed incomes freezing to death in the winter.
