I understand that many people just love Nirvana and ascribe some god-like qualities to Cobain. I don't want to troll this thread but just be aware that there are at least as many people feeling the exact opposite about him and his "music".

This can literally be said for almost any subjective thing in existence, but why did you put "music" in quotes?

They were an interesting novelty band for a time.

Because I don't like "it".
And you'll find out in this thread that Cobain fans do not agree with your statement.

I am a bit of a fan, but kind of sick of Nirvana.  I turn them off when they come on the radio as it has just been too much.  I do the same to a lot of bands whose music I kind of like for the same reason; Boston, Aerosmith, U2...

Having said that though, the hour-long documentary on NetFlix about the making of "Nevermind" was pretty cool.

You are now obligated to tell the thread what is good music.  Real music, not "music."  Go ahead, let us know what's good.

As someone who has been around a while, going from the music of the late 60's until now, Nirvana was just what rock, and the youth of the day needed.  It meant the death of the predictable and stagnant hair/glam metal.  Replaced by the grit and angst that rock needed.

Mozart.

Bach.

They were a decent 5 chord rock band but just because they whined out their lyrics doesn't mean that they killed hair bands. Guns n Roses did that.

Cobain fans don't believe that as many people can like one subjective thing as not?  Weird.

And I don't like Prince, but I don't put his "music" in "quotes".  Just because you don't like someone's art doesn't invalidate it.

/for the record, I am fairly ambivalent when it comes to Cobain.  Grohl, on the other hand, is an awesome drummer.

As soon as I put the finishing touches on my klezmer-blues-symphony for the massed Great Highland bagpipes, electric jaw harp, and didgeribone, I'll *SHOW* you.

I suppose.  Not a big fan, but after Appetite, Asshole Rose did stop with the teasing comb and gallon of AquaNet.

Even during Appetite, GnR didn't really sound like most 'hair' bands (as vague and pointless as that term is, given the broad range of bands that did the "look" of the time).

no, it just put his "I'm not here to troll, but" line into perspective, now it's the equivalent to "I'm not a racist, but" opener.

When I submit a "memorial" thread "honoring" my favorite artist who killed himself because he didn't like his fans by linking to an artificial acappella track then you are more than welcome to make fun of my music taste.

I'm an old metal guy, and although there was some serviceable metal produced during the 80s and there was some really good stuff too, I never got into the hair band shiat. That said I never understood the Nirvana hate. I like most of the music they released and frankly I'm glad they and other grunge bands came along and killed hair metal.

For God's sake, even Ozzy had big hair during that time! fark that!

I actually like Nirvana, and I agree.  Cobain is waaaay overrated, and the band is famous only because he blew his head off.  Even their best stuff, Incesticide and In Utero, isn't enough to make Cobain "legendary" or "one of the greatest guitarists ever".

As totally apathetic as I am toward the existence of Kurt Cobain and pretty much everything he ever did, I think this is probably a true statement. Everything I've ever seen about him leads me to think that he'd be horrified to find that his legacy in the public conciousness pretty much boils down to Smells Like Teen Spirit. That said, given how he wound up I think he knew he was headed there anyhow.

Don't get me wrong, I wore out my Nevermind tape just like everyone else. I didn't replace it, though.
