Also, can we have a ceremony for the word "literally"? Something similar to when the N word was buried, except let's really mean it this time. How many times have we heard, "I literally died!"? (from someone who didn't... unfortunately)

These are the people that gave us that crap Facebook app, which has consistently been the most unstable app on my phones.  They're going to make a home screen replacement?

This isn't Facebook Home.  This is Facebook LAG.

Facebook home is the best thing that can happen for Apple. It'll give Android users the type of laggy and force closey experience that drives people to buy iPhones.

Facebook is making my phone suck = My phone sucks = buy an iPhone.

slashy/ pre-ordered a G1, currently on my 5th Android phone, and I use an iPhone 4 as a company phone

I don't have a Facebook account, and no, I would not want something like this installed on *my* phone but with that being said I can see this idea really taking off because, it appears to me, there are just that many people who are truly addicted to "Facebooking". And let's face it; if you're an avid "Facebooker" you don't give a crap about your personal, online, privacy.

Isn't it pretty well established that Facebook is dying out? Everyone I know has had their fill of it.

I don't expect them to disappear or anything, but I expect their active user base to shrink like crazy in the next couple of years, which will kill their advertising revenue.

It was a fad, like all the other social networking sites. Hopefully, it's the FINAL social networking site.

Social networking is absolutely here to stay.  Facebook may go away, but only when something better comes along to replace it.  Nobody really likes it, but nobody is running away either because where are you going to go?  If all your friends and family are still on FB, you're stuck.

In fact? now we have a scientific metric for smartphone quality? You expressed an opinion that was snarky and obviously anti-apple. I'm sure you have much better ideas for a phone design but you aren't going to tell us until a phone comes out that you don't like. Then you'll tell us how they got it all wrong.

Apple spent the R&D money to come out with a phone that became the gold standard. Every phone that came out after the iPhone has copied and mimicked (and many times improved upon) features that the iPhone has. They have faster processors, cameras with higher resolution, bigger screens, but who cares?

The Camero ZL1 has a supercharged V8 that puts out 580HP, but I'd still rather have the 911 Carrera at 350 HP. There are diminishing returns on things like processor speed, MegaPixels, screensize and, in the case of cars, BHP.

How are the Talking Heads obscure?

Silly Wino, it's sarcasm.

BullBearMS: Facebook Home should put privacy advocates on alert, for this application erodes any idea of privacy. If you install this, then it is very likely that Facebook is going to be able to track your every move, and every little action. As Zuckerberg said - unlike the iPhone and iOS, Android allows Facebook to do whatever it wants on the platform, and that means accessing the hardware as well.

The problem is that Facebook is going to use all this data - not to improve our lives - but to target better marketing and advertising messages at us. Zuckerberg made no bones about the fact that Facebook will be pushing ads on Home.

And most importantly it is Facebook, a company that is known to have played loose-and-easy with consumer privacy and data since its very inception, asking for forgiveness whenever we caught them with its hand in the cookie jar. I don't think we can be that forgiving or reactive with Facebook on mobile.

Giving Facebook and Google realtime access to your GPS data? Genius.

Yet people will wait in line and drop to their knees in worship to sign up for this sh*t. Idiots!

The only possible iPhone killer was the Palm Pre/WebOs.

Problem is... they screwed it up in an award winning way.

Android is crap, overly complex, annoying to use, and I've yet to use two phones that has the same approach aside the basics.

I'd go with a BlackBerry before anything else... I'd even consider the iPhone before an Android one.

But I've seen the demo video for "ubuntu mobile" and that's got some serious potential if it gets picked up.

The hipsters moved on long ago and are now bragging about how rebellious they are to be on their 83rd Android phone, 'I knew Android was It before Samsung rounded their first corner.' iPhone is the now the conservative, it just works option. And that's not a bad place to be as long as they keep their amazing margins.

"The basic assumption behind Facebook Home is that you'd rather see what your friends are up to at any given moment than do things"

and that's the ultimate question. if facebook is a priority for 90% of smartphone users, then yes, this will probably be another advantage for android. otherwise, I'll think of it as just an unecessary extension of the android facebook app and probably never use it. If more people are like me then it's not gonna do anything for android. either way, "apple killer" is a pretty big stretch. google maps are more of an apple killer at this point!

tylerdurden217: In fact? now we have a scientific metric for smartphone quality? You expressed an opinion that was snarky and obviously anti-apple.

I think you and the OP I was responding to are getting a bit carried away. The iPhone is not everyone's favorite, is it? Are there better features on other phones? Did I say Apple sucked? Did I say anything negative about it? No. I said it was a mediocre to good device, which, while not a rave, and certainly not scientific, is accurate. I fully admit to being glib with the use of the word "fact", especially since I was posting opinion. But when it comes down to it, I really didn't fall on either side of the fence, even though it is clear I lean away from Apple.

I know it doesn't look up hookers on Craigslist for you but it's still among the best smart phones you can buy. And while the Galaxy sIII is probably the best phone on the market right now no one picks one up and goes "Oh Jesus, this thing..how do other things even exsist when this is on the market."  In other words If it's "mediocre-to-good" so is everything else, or your standards are too high because it doesn't have features that don't exsist yet, or you just don't like Apple.

And if you come back with "Apple doesn't have NFC, and the S3 can host up to 5 more people on a mobile hotspot" I'm going to laugh even harder.

People who want faster phones with bigger screens and better cameras?

In early android apple could still say "who cares, we have the best OS", but that advantage is no longer even relevant, the new android OS is just as slick as ios (better IMO but OS preference is largely just that).

pedobearapproved: still among the best smart phones you can buy

Sure. It's among them.

pedobearapproved: And while the Galaxy sIII is probably the best phone on the market right now

A lot of people agree with that, yeah.

pedobearapproved: no one picks one up and goes "Oh Jesus, this thing..how do other things even exsist when this is on the market."

Exactly true.

pedobearapproved: In other words If it's "mediocre-to-good" so is everything else,

Yeah, that's pretty much my point.

pedobearapproved: or you just don't like Apple.

I don't "don't like" Apple.

So let's review: I agree with everything you just said. My original post said Apple wasn't going anywhere because it had a decent device with a large following. And suddenly you foam at mouth and feel the need to accuse me of fornication with loose women. I suspect it was the use of the word mediocre. If it makes you feel better, I'll take that one word back.

I will still stick to my guns with point 2: it is my strong opinion that Facebook sucks and I will not be convinced otherwise.

Doc_Gerbil: A facebook phone is about the last thing I'd want.

I am already trying to decided if I can live without facebook, a phone that automagically hooks me into it sounds farking sweet.

Pretty much this.  I gave up my ATT ~$160/mo Facebook Phone for a $19.95 Republic Wireless phone, just because I was tired of all the extra bullshiat.

It will still do FB, but it's so slow and crap that I save if for when I really need to interact with someone.  Usually it's too painful to stay screwing around on it for hours - which is what I wanted.

lilplatinum: tylerdurden217: They have faster processors, cameras with higher resolution, bigger screens, but who cares?

People who want faster phones with bigger screens and better cameras?

In early android apple could still say "who cares, we have the best OS", but that advantage is no longer even relevant, the new android OS is just as slick as ios (better IMO but OS preference is largely just that).

Yes, people do want those things. At least the people I talk to about it. I shouldn't paint everyone with the opinion that Android phones are better with that brush. My apologies.

I think I need to check out Android again, it's been a while and maybe I would prefer it too. I've had an iPhone since the 3GS came out. I'm mostly happy with my 4S, but I'm not against checking out the android. I guess I'm too lazy to research which Android is the best. It's easy to know which iPhone is the best.

2013-04-05 03:19:29 PM

WinoRhino: I think you and the OP I was responding to are getting a bit carried away.

You're right, I did get a bit carried away. I hadn't had lunch yet, I'm feeling much more agreeable now that I have. Sorry about that. I use the word fact to describe my opinions too. Mostly because they are always right... jk

I don't expect them to disappear or anything, but I expect their active user base to shrink like crazy in the next couple of years, which will kill their advertising revenue.

It was a fad, like all the other social networking sites. Hopefully, it's the FINAL social networking site.

Everyone on facebook claims to have their breaking points, but no one I know has ever dropped off because of the changes.  New advertising in place, they threaten to leave, and they don't.   Announce all photos are usable by FB at will, everyone threatens to bail, and they don't.  Threats of instant play commercials, and everyone murmurs about leaving again... and they don't.

It wasn't Facebook centric... it just had a hardware button to launch the Facebook app.

I was kind of amused that the author claimed it was the first time you could respond to messages without closing the article you're reading... because Samsung has allowed multiple apps on the same screen for a while now. He must use an iPhone which severely limits what you can do.

They've improved the Android app quite a bit lately. They admitted they hadn't been working on it much because they're all 1%ers and use iPhones.

But on iPhone you aren't allowed to delete the Facebook app because it is integrated into the OS, so if you want to avoid Facebook you can't own Apple products.

Who are these "people" you are talking about, Mr. get-off-my-lawn man? The amount of people who are concerned about this kind of security is vastly overwhelmed by the people who, like the gay marriage stuff, "just don't care."

Personally, I'm more than happy trying to spend less time on my electronic doodads, and really, having facebook as a home screen isn't for me, but there's a whole generation who feel enabled and empowered about connecting with their friends electronically, and they are ultimately willing to live with an environment of "so they can track me, no big deal, as long as I can connect as fast and as easy as possible". And really, that's probably going to be the way of the future, for better or for worse, unless something amazingly terrible happens.

Yeah sure. It's no big deal if it's only used by tweens and other, mostly un- or underemployed, people. But those simply -as stated- don't give a shiat. The vocal minority that DO care have valid concerns though. The firm I work for has a strict 'no social media' policy and let me tell you, walking into the offices with facebook home on your phone would probably get you fired - from a cannon. out the window.
You know what's the first thing a divorce (or any other civil) lawyer does? Check facebook of both parties. Hell I've even seen cases get declined after a cursory glance at a potential clients profile declares him/her a mouthbreathing retard.

I personally can't see anything good about 'facebook home' on the other hand though, being able to get GPS logs with those fb conversations would be hilarious.

That's a weapon/killing problem.  Facebook just facilitates that kind of behaviour like nothing else. I don't care if the CEO of Asswipes Inc across the street goes downtown every evening and lets people spit on him for money. But I DO care if I need to represent him in court and he has pictures of that on his wall.

Fact is, every year facebook gets more integrated into daily life and the goddamn stupid shiat people do gets pushed to a larger audience. So more people do the same stupid shiat. Next year, last years shiat doesn't stink as bad so the idiots keep shoveling more fresh shiat on the pile. And in the end it's shiat all the way down.

Yeah, this is an interesting issue. Back with myspace, you needed to know how to use the internet. Nowadays, for a lot of people, facebook IS the internet and they don't go anywhere else. Hell, a lot of people essentially use the free games on facebook as their very own console game...granted, it's venn diagram doesn't match up with console gamers at all. But it was an untapped market that was waiting to be filled.

EatHam: You can flip through the pictures, Like them, and even comment on things without ever unlocking your device.

Well, that sounds safe.

FTA: If most people's phones are already Facebook phones, Facebook Home makes them Facebookier, bringing the social-network's content (including, at some point, ads), to your phone's foremost screen.

ISO15693: You guys, you overlook the fact that a new word has entered the lexicon: Facebookier.

I could have lived my entire life without ever encountering the word "Facebookier," and died happy.

Dragonflew: santadog: realmolo: Isn't it pretty well established that Facebook is dying out? Everyone I know has had their fill of it.

I don't expect them to disappear or anything, but I expect their active user base to shrink like crazy in the next couple of years, which will kill their advertising revenue.

It was a fad, like all the other social networking sites. Hopefully, it's the FINAL social networking site.

It's not a fad.  It's becoming a staple of communication.

I didn't bail because of privacy concerns, I don't share enough real info to care.  I bailed because 99% of my posts were images of quotes, Autism Week spam, and links to malware.  It's not Facebook, it's Pastebook.  No one communicates, they just echo.

Maybe you need better friends.
