Comparing Cobain to Lennon is an insult to Cobain.

Both of you should try not being dicks.

The comparison of Lennon and Cobain isn't a bad one. Both of them were iconic figures that many fans held in higher esteem than most other popular artists. As far as talent is concerned, that's totally subjective. It's also entirely likely that people who have more respect for
someone from their own generation or closer to their own generation.

Some of us, however, can see past the bullshiat to realize that both Lennon and Cobain are deserving of respect. Lennon and the Beatles were influential and changed the course of popular music. Cobain and Nirvana did the same. They can be equally criticized for the problems they had in their personal lives. In then end, they had faults, just like everyone else.

But yeah, let's turn this thread into a dick waving contest. That's always the best choice.

That's very thoughtful and well-reasoned.

So, I'm afraid we're going to have to ask you to leave.

Lsherm: FirstNationalBastard: And, like Lennon, dying young made him into more of a legend than if he had lived.

Unlike Lennon, Cobain benefitted disproportionately compared to his level of talent.  Nirvana had one great album, one middling album, and one album no one listened to until after he offed himself.

Kurt Cobain was good at feeling sorry for himself and doing drugs to feel better.  Then he had a kid and instead of getting help he shot himself and left her to Courtney Love, which is just about the most despicable thing you can do to a child.

As opposed to Lennon, who by his own words regularly beat the women he was with.

The lyrics to ICP's "Terrible" come to mind.
The whole world was crying when Kurt's gun went BANG!
When Eazy-E died though, it wasn't no thang
Rapper dies of A.I.D.S. but you hardly mention
Rocker blows his face off and becomes a legend
Heroin and a shotgun, a hero is made
Maybe I should do that shiat so J can get paid

It's never a good time for ICP lyrics unless it's about magnets.

Add to that list Joplin, Hendrix, Moon, Bonham, Morrision, etc...

Music, especially popular music is obsessed with stories, legends and myths.  Dying before they could shatter any of the myths was the best thing they could have ever done.  So they get elevated into some kind of mythical status instead of grow old and out of rock.  Nirvana fans should thank their lucky stars Kurt isn't around today releasing folk albums on the banjo.

I liked Nirvana.  I was in college but I didn't give a flying f*ck about him and his shotgun sandwich.  But I remember thinking to myself "Oh God.  Here it comes.  The guy who was just pretty good will now be considered an alltime legend and I'll have to hear about this crap every year for the rest of my life."
So far I've been right.

Heard about it on IRC.

Went outside, up to Broadway Ave, and found about double the normal amount of sullen sad suburban teens walking around looking lost, wearing their best flannel.

A few days later I overheard two teen girls say outloud that they hoped they could find "a Kurt Cobain sweater" at the Buffalo Exchange clothes store.

A Kurt Cobain sweater?

What, was it stained with blood and brain matter?

You think that's bad, I was just out of college and on my way to work in Manhattan when news came over the radio in my car that Lennon had been murdered. That was a very sad time.

And then the giant clusterfk at the Seattle Center fountain, you've all seen that thing. Courtney raging, everyone suddenly feeling like it was her fault. That nutcase that *really* thought it was her fault, got on cable access for years pushing his theories.

Fun C/S/B. So I lived in the neighborhood that Cobain's followers considered their spiritual home, Seattle Capitol Hill/Belltown, we were the center of the "Seattle Alternative Scene" or at least where most of the trendy followers were. The street was the center everyone drove to to just walk around and soak up the vibe in the days after he died. Broadway was full of sad lil grunger teens from all the burbs.

And a year later, I was living in Upper Haight San Francisco when Jerry Garcia died, and I got to see it all over again.

The joke was if you were a worshipped rock icon you did not want me living in your fans main social hub neighborhood, cause it meant you'd be dead soon.

His death is finally old enough to realize his lyrics weren't that deep and that Dave Grohl was the reason Nirvana had catchy songs.
