I was in my car listening to the local alt/"modern rock" station when the DJ broke in and announced it.  Odd that I can remember it vividly since I wasn't a huge Nirvana fan at the time.

Has it really been a year since the 18th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death?

Cobain might have treated the women in his life better, but Lennon was a better artist and probably left a bigger musical legacy.  That doesn't excuse his violence against women, of course, but lots of artists have had personal failings.

Lennon at least had an established body of work.

Lennon evolved out of that.  He admitted what a bastard he'd been and changed his ways.

Comparing Cobain to Lennon is only an apt comparison on three counts:  they were male, they played music, they were killed by gunfire.

Cobain didn't create the vast library of masterpieces that Lennon did.  Maybe if he'd had an equal level writing partner like Lennon did and had lived long enough, he could have gotten closer.

Then again, Lennon was only 28 when the Beatles broke up.  Cobain was 27 when he offed himself. Courtney killed him.

I was sitting in my apt a block off Broadway Ave in Seattle, using the internet to my school's dialup.

Heard about it on IRC.

Went outside, up to Broadway Ave, and found about double the normal amount of sullen sad suburban teens walking around looking lost, wearing their best flannel.

A few days later I overheard two teen girls say outloud that they hoped they could find "a Kurt Cobain sweater" at the Buffalo Exchange clothes store.

And then the giant clusterfk at the Seattle Center fountain, you've all seen that thing. Courtney raging, everyone suddenly feeling like it was her fault. That nutcase that *really* thought it was her fault, got on cable access for years pushing his theories.

Fun C/S/B. So I lived in the neighborhood that Cobain's followers considered their spiritual home, Seattle Capitol Hill/Belltown, we were the center of the "Seattle Alternative Scene" or at least where most of the trendy followers were. The street was the center everyone drove to to just walk around and soak up the vibe in the days after he died. Broadway was full of sad lil grunger teens from all the burbs.

And a year later, I was living in Upper Haight San Francisco when Jerry Garcia died, and I got to see it all over again.

The joke was if you were a worshipped rock icon you did not want me living in your fans main social hub neighborhood, cause it meant you'd be dead soon.

The comparison of Lennon and Cobain isn't a bad one. Both of them were iconic figures that many fans held in higher esteem than most other popular artists. As far as talent is concerned, that's totally subjective. It's also entirely likely that people who have more respect for
someone from their own generation or closer to their own generation.

Some of us, however, can see past the bullshiat to realize that both Lennon and Cobain are deserving of respect. Lennon and the Beatles were influential and changed the course of popular music. Cobain and Nirvana did the same. They can be equally criticized for the problems they had in their personal lives. In then end, they had faults, just like everyone else.

But yeah, let's turn this thread into a dick waving contest. That's always the best choice.

Yeah, me too. Except I liked Nirvana a lot and was really sad about Cobain's death. The last time I went home I noticed that the little side road I was driving down when I heard the news no longer exists. It's a strip mall now. For some reason that bothered me.

And popular music has really, REALLY sucked since then.

I didn't worship the guy, but I really like Nirvana.
