timujin: Here's the thing, I'll never visit Haiti.  Not because it's a festering shiathole ravaged by economic failure and natural catastrophe, but because of the people.  I used to live in South Florida, where there are a lot of Haitian immigrants.  I know they come from a rough place with a really bad history, and that's probably why they are the way they are, but every single one I met was an asshole.  Now, that might be just bad luck, but I still have yet to meet a Haitian that isn't.  And I welcome your anecdotal evidence (the best kind of evidence) that contradicts mine.  I don't want to dislike and entire country, but I have had nothing but bad experiences with them.

I've met one hatian I liked and it probably doesn't count.  She was in elementry school with me, was adopted by an American couple and lived here since about 4 years old.
Other than that 2nd generation hatian I've met and liked.

I've had the same problem with the French.  I've met a dozen or so French people and only one was likeable.

I went to a Haitian restaurant in Columbus last year, and the proprietors (a husband and wife from Haiti) were just super nice people.  Food was good too.

Is it possible that all the assholes left Haiti, and the only ones left there are pleasant, friendly people?  I live in West Michigan where we have a large population of (descendants of) Dutch immigrants. They are (mostly, not all) conservative, xenophobic, anti-drug, closed-minded people.  Yet Holland (the country, not the city) is largely liberally-minded and progressive.

They have a tourist industry that consists of walled beachfront resorts with armed guards. I remember after the earthquake there were some articles about the resorts just outside of port au prince that were open and doing good business less than 2 weeks after the disaster.

I have known, worked with and taught many Haitians and I can pretty confidently state that the problem is you and not them.  Some of the kindest and friendliest immigrants in South Florida.

I've had the similar experience with Mormons...all of which I met at college or through work.

Not a large sample size for sure (less than 10), but every Mormon I've ever met was a serious asshole...and I can pretty much work and get along with anyone. BTW, I'm also 100% sure it's just bad luck...

A friend of mine has a theory that is bullshiat, but does make you think for a second, to the point where I almost buy it. Almost.

Summed up it is : the people who can afford to get out of a country first when social unrest rears its head are those with the cunning cheating sense to see it coming and have made money. Basically the worst of a society gets out first and the good parts are left behind because to cheat their fellow man would be anethema.
