I definitely appreciate Rand Paul's views on the drug war and foreign policy, but I would never vote for him in a million years. Abolishing Social Security and Medicare are completely unacceptable to me.

And for the record, I will be 32 for the next presidential election.

RAND PAUL running for the GOP nomination?

TheBeastOfYuccaFlats: The main difference is that Obama could get elected.  Rand is unelectable as president.

There are a LOT of stupid scared racist nitwits who don't understand economics or politics out there. He'd get 40% of the vote easy.

DarwiOdrade: Arkanaut: FlashHarry: before you get too excited, don't forget that rand paul is batshiat crazy.

Is he crazy, or just dumb as rocks?

Why not both?

Occam's / Hanlon's Razor, mostly.

StrikitRich: Rand Paul is only voting 'Present' in the Senate now?

That's honestly what I expected.

There was one too many "Inasmuch"'s in that article.

Then I'll have to go with crazy. Evidence suggests that becoming a medical doctor requires one to be smarter than rocks.

Remind me how much of the vote Ron Paul got? How much different is Rand?

2013-04-05 02:11:17 PM
It is because Rand Paul is somewhat articulate? Because his father is somewhat well-known as a *guffaws* social critic?

Why is this dipshiat getting so much attention these days? What good is he?

2013-04-05 02:11:24 PM
This many years later, and the idiots still haven't the slightest clue as to why candidate Obama appealed so strongly to such a broad constituency. What's so obvious to the rest of us is utterly invisible to them.

He's a genuinely decent man, stating simple truths that resonate well with regular people, articulated in a compelling manner.

Rand Paul is a two-bit imitation, saying all the wrong things for entirely self-serving reasons, and fooling only people who desperately want to be fooled... or who can't tell the difference. No one will remember his name a few years from now.

2013-04-05 02:13:47 PM

tallguywithglasseson: GAT_00: He is however quite stupid enough to get Republicans to vote for him.

RAND PAUL would/will never make it past the primary.

He's got the state's rights/racists shored up.
He can probably get a lot of the social conservatives -- he supports a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, for example.
Fiscal conservatives - check.

National security / defense / hawks - not so much.

IMO that faction is still needed to win the primary. Don't think Paul can get them back at this point.

He won't make it past the primary for the same reason his dad couldn't - only 20-30% of the GOP likes him. Maybe RAND ticks that up a few points, because Fartbamadrones, but RAND has the same fundamental problem his dad does.

// but Rand doesn't have his dad's "I'm not a racist, I just sign my name to racist newsletters and fund their publication" problem
// ...yet?

2013-04-05 02:15:28 PM
I don't agree with a lot of the guy's policies, but he strikes me as far more idealogically consistent than most Republicans.  And this quote from the article is an awareness of a social issue I wouldn't expect from a Republican:

"Look, the last two presidents could conceivably have been put in jail for their drug use. And I really think look what would have happened: It would have ruined their lives. They got lucky, but a lot of poor kids, particularly in the inner city, don't get lucky, they don't have good attorneys and they go to jail for these things and I think it's a big mistake."

Dr Dreidel: // but Rand doesn't have his dad's "I'm not a racist, I just sign my name to racist newsletters and fund their publication" problem

No, he's already played the "I'm not racist, I just believe the Civil Rights Act should be repealed because socialism. And if anyone bars people of color from their place of business I swear I will rage I will fight I will derp derp derp derp."

Something like that.

Hillary will wipe the floor with him.

It's actually three... remember how Clinton "didn't inhale"?

But yeah, I do like his stance on drugs. Not enough to vote for him given the rest, though.

The Paulites just don't seem to grasp the fact that their brand of DERP is an even smaller minority in this country than Mormonism.

Sure, he does have some positions we can all agree with, but that's like finding someone's engagement ring they accidentally dropped in the toilet.

I will contribute one silver dime to his campaign. What he chooses to buy with that silver dime depends on his needs and the free market forces that set prices on goods and services without any influence beyond those of unhindered supply and demand.

Tigger: After the speech he gave at the DNC several people walked into my office and said "I think we just saw America's first black president".

But in 2008?

None of this changes the fact that Rand Paul is an unelectable wackaloon.

Agreed but never over-estimate the intelligence of the people.

2013-04-05 02:48:02 PM
He's like every adorable 'libertarian-theory-over-practice' guy I know wrapped into one.

I hope he comes back to the "segregation would have ended because of the free-market economics of it" idea.  It's brilliant precisely because it conflicts strongly with the "You know, Rand, segregation actually happened, lasted for a century, and never made 'economic sense' in the first place" line of reasoning.  But, between the two streams of thought, you *know* the libertarian-theorist is always going to take the theoretically pure path over the "this actually happened" path.  This behavior is so predictable that leading such guys off the rails is like shooting fish in a barrel.  Still kinda fun, though.

He'd get 45% easily.  But there is no way in hell he could get that last five percent.

I imagine he has too many sound bites on record showing him as a nutter to win the presidency.  Too few people pay attention to congressional elections for those things to sink people (and gerrymandering factors in too of course).  For the presidency? Even Romney's relatively minor foot-in-mouth stuff sunk him.

whidbey: Why is someone out there assuming he's even worth a shiat at all politically?

Either the party itself is the crazy responsible for the 'republican hero of the month' club, or the lamestream msm conservamedia is sinking their own party of choice in an attempt to get more views.

I'm fine with either.  The party deserves to sink for its embracing of the crazy, regardless of where it stems from (where from it stems?).

This is what I call "The Libertarian Broken Clock Syndrome". Any time a Libertarian seems to have rational views it's simply because their ideological "NO GOVERNMENT EVER" mantra just happens to be right in that particular instance, not because they've actually thought anything through.

He has more than that just in this thread. But if he wins the primary, the 28%ers will go all in to back him, and the rest of the derp machine will work their tails off to make it sound like a good idea. It will be awesome.

And all too often it doesn't even mean they are against the issue itself, but will happily get on on board if it is a state government.
