I'd like to see a 3rd place game between the conference losers for an additional draft pick. Fit it in as the 33rd overall pick and bump everything down a notch.

Dear NFL:

No amount of tweaking will fix what is, by its very nature, a really stupid idea. An all-star game at the end of a brutal season with a bunch of banged-up guys giving 10% just so they can get a vacation to Hawaii on the company dime isn't compelling sport. Nobody gives a shiat about the Pro Bowl. Nobody will ever give a shiat about the Pro Bowl.

Sincerely,

Every NFL fan in existence

Sorry, I've got other priorities.  Take your cute little "draft" somewhere else.

Just name people to the team, and forego the "game" entirely.

Change it so they only play for one half and then have a whole bunch of skill competitions, and let players do competitions in other position categories.

-Offensive lineman field punting contest
-Kickers pushing the blocking sled
-Tom Brady and Peyton Manning picking off a Joe Flacco toss.

You know, fun amusing things that people would watch!

That's way too high a pick. FFS, 3rd place would be way more valuable than 2nd place.

As for skills competition I'd love to see kickers playing a game of HORSE.

You have a valid point. But something to make them play to win.

Ratings higher than the World Series (and double the SCF ratings) disagree.

BTW, this year's Pro Bowl didn't suck.

They should still have the skills competitions (I know they used to) and have it be a weekend-long celebration like the three other leagues.

No, they're actually going to have the game instead of canceling it every other year.

/and hockey copied it from every single sport ever played on a playground
//stupid NBA not listening to Bill Simmons telling them to do it years before the NHL took the idea

when did the NHL start?  I remember I think when the NBA had its ill-fated ASG in Vegas, several NBA talking heads saying the teams should be picked schoolyard style.

i don't care what the answer is, if hockey had it first WGAF, but just curious when they started doing that.  that's cool as shiat.

it would also be cool if, at the MLB ASG, home field wasn't determined by the winner, but the old schoolyard, "throw the bat to the player, then fist on top of fist and last fist gets first AB" trick, but the last fist gets homefield.

can you imagine, you know, the managers or like, Pablo Sandoval and Multiple Miggs Cabrera playing the "fist on bat" game?  hilarious.  prime time tv baby!

They did that for a decade in the pre-Super Bowl era, without the draft pick. Nobody gave a fark and Lombardi called it "a loser's bowl for losers". You add a draft pick in and teams will be actively playing to lose because why the hell should they play for the right to have an extra guy come in trying to take one of their jobs?

2013-04-05 01:30:38 PM
Just abolish the stupid game already.  Honor players by naming all-conference teams and let that be that.

I don't think that would be enough to make people play to lose - most guys think that it's not going to be them that gets cut, not to mention the fact that once you're in the game, you want to win no matter what.

But I kinda would love to see a game where both teams were intentionally trying to lose but couldn't look like they weren't trying, just to see what it looked like. I'm thinking like that baseball team in "The Losing Edge" that got really, really good at making it so they could lose.

They do need a "Home Run Derby" type event, don't they?  Not sure that America would tune in for a Field Goal Derby, but maybe some long passes would work.

You know, I have no idea when the NHL started doing the draft-style all star selection.  There may be a better hockey historian around these parts.

Dude, if the MLB ASG had that, it would absolutely be so cool.

2011 - the idea had been kicked around for the NBA to do it for several years, if only in Bill Simmons columns.

/the NHL ASG was canceled in '05, '06, '10, and '12

Really, the thing the Pro Bowlers want is the trip to Hawaii. A nice reward for a job well done over the course of the year and a chance to just relax their bodies with family in tow. The Pro Bowl is the bullshiat thing they're made to do to get the trip and really the very last thing they want to do at that point- break their bodies a little more. Because... why? The season's over for them. What the hell's the point risking injury in a game that means literally nothing and comes after they're already beaten up from the accumulated bruises of the entire season? Why, when the very next thing that their teams do is decide who gets cut for cap space and free agency? Is that really a place you want to put any more effort than the league forces you to?

2013-04-05 01:36:52 PM
Correction - '13, not '12. Sucks to have the typo on the last keystroke.

Many of them actually like it and enjoy playing football.

The reason so many of them stick around long after their bodies start breaking down isn't the money.

yeah!  like, win or lose, who cares, but after the game ends, pick the AL MVP, pick the NL MVP, and the winning team's MVP throws the bat to the loser MVP, and then they play the fist game.

/i get a weird  kind of tingly kind of special  feeiling "down there" whenever I say "fist game"

You only see the ones physically capable of doing something after their bodies start breaking down. Same reason you only see the people on Biggest Loser reunions who haven't ballooned back up to their pre-show weight (and the reason Rulon Gardner was nudged off the show after it became clear he was falling off the wagon while still in the damn house).

Well, SOMEONE really wants to join Sherriff Joe on the Hawaii Do Not Fly List.

Here's an idea. Do it Preseason. Before the Hall of Fame game. No beat up players. No one skipping because of the Super Bowl.

Oh, and keep it in Hawaii so there's some incentive in winning a spot, k?

2013-04-05 01:57:10 PM
If I'm not mistaken, Tom Brady has played in 1 Pro Bowl - 2005.  He's been selected many years but hasn't gone due to injury or being in the Super Bowl.  Since the guy's shoulder can bearly get a pass outside the numbers these days, I'm going with Tom Brady will never play in another Pro Bowl.

Well, then they'll be skipping because they have to worry about the season. Hell, the coaches might start ordering them to sit it out or putting pressure on the Pro Bow coaches to coddle their guys.

Face it. There's no way you're going to get players going at full-tilt in any game that is not part of the path to the Super Bowl. There's simply no way.

No fixing required, it's still the highest rated show on TV in its time slot.

2013-04-05 02:13:30 PM

IAmRight: /as a Seahawks fan, you should like it

Why?  For the next five years, the eight or nine Seahawks named to the team each year will be forced to sit out.

2013-04-05 02:17:29 PM
No pads, no contact beyond wrapping up, make the one game of the year we get to see what those guys can do when they aren't weighed down with pads, helmets, etc.  It pretty much turns into passing game porn I'd assume, but it would be fun.  Especially if the coaches let left tackles line up as WRs and things like that. The Pro Bowl will always be subpar football when it involves contact.

I love the idea of them just doing an NFL QB challenge type compeitition. Someone mentioned the kickers playing HORSE. That's a great idea and you could make up a competition or 2 for each position. All with no pads and no game. Mic a fe people up.

I'd watch that.

who cares?

Olympic hockey is eleventy billion times better than any crappy all-star game.  The NHL should get rid if the all-star game for good.

So should the other major sports. The ProBowl is boring as fark. And the World Baseball Classic was way more entertaining than any baseball all star game in the last ten years.
