I'm sure it had nothing to do with budget sequestration or federal legislation being held hostage by the House.

Obviously this is all Obama's fault.

Two threads up:  Unemployment rate drops to 7.6%. GOP: "That's fake". The economy created 88K jobs in the month of March. GOP: "Obama is killing the economy"

hmmm...

We have the lowest labor participation rate since jimmy carter

It's getting annoying. That said, this is not a good jobs report.

The Boomer generation turned 67 this year.  Can't imagine those who want to retire at that age.

bdub77: I'm sure it had nothing to do with budget sequestration

I don't think the effects of sequestration have quite made it out into the wild yet as far as UE. The professional and business services sector added jobs while the retail sector lost jobs. This is leading some to attribute this low hiring number to the expiration of the payroll tax cut. The UE effects of the sequester are yet to come.

What specific legislation is being held hostage?  The everyone gets a job and unicorn bill?

Gotta ask, does that include the zillions of Baby Boomers that are retiring?

No, Subby.  500K dropped from the work force, 50-60% of which are retirees.  Those who "just stop looking" are termed discouraged workers, who's numbers were "little changed from a year earlier. "

Baby boomers are living longer than ever before, and not only that, but most importantly of all, they are choosing to work longer than ever.

WOW!  An anecdotal story with no actual statistics from 2009.  Bravo!

Try again.

No, that is only for those that are "marginally attached".  "They were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey. "

True enough, but this is still not great job growth, and not all of the drop in the workforce is explained by retirees.  If we're going to be more honest than the GOP we have to admit that there might be more than one explanation (the one we want) for a given statistic.

Our shop is dark next week. We also do retail fixtures and millwork. The industry has been in the basement since 2008, no end in sight.

It's had an effect in defense. Contractors are laying people off or stalling on filling slots, civil service is looking at (delayed) furloughs, air shows are being canceled, and the brass are talking about cutting down training flights. That's all I've seen at my level.

/One of the upcoming lay-offs :(

Both the U3 and the U6 dropped.  In other words, the number of people who want to work but can't went down.  Not the same as "stopped looking".

About 85% of my money comes from retail, yes. We do lots off "one-off" work for people as well, and am trying to make that more than the other 15% as Biesse routers aren't cheap.

aus·ter·i·ty
/ôˈsteritē/NounSternness or severity of manner or attitude.Extreme plainness and simplicity of style or appearance. Use in sentences:

"Europe has enacted economic austerity, resulting in terrible economic performance and horrible employment figures."
"America is now enacting austerity measures mirroring that of Europe via their sequestration, and its population is surprised to learn that their proverbial anus now feels as sore as Europe's."

See, this is the problem. It doesn't matter how many dollars you shove into a rich man's hand, if there's no money for the masses to buy product, there's no economy! Period. Whine about taxes all you want, but we're already seeing the consequences of the massive constipated block of wealth sitting in the 1%'s hands, with the increased violence and other issues. That's the brilliance of what Ford did; he treated the worker as a potential best customer, and knew he'd get better production if he could win them over. I like how Obama is sorta sneaky doing it by going after the tax-dodgers who are on these lists that keep getting "leaked" out, but I'm not sure it'll be enough, and it still doesn't address the unavoidable fact that trickle down is simply not trickling down.
