What the view would really be if the other planets were to actually come as close to the Earth as the moon:

Myria: Luna and Sol are just as generic of names as Moon and Sun - they're just Latin instead of Germanic.

I'm kind of curious when in history it was figured out that the Sun is a star.

Anaxagoras proposed that around 450 BCE, but it wasn't until  Friedrich Bessel measured stellar parallax in 1838 that we could know the distance to (nearby) stars.  That allowed astronomers to discover that other stars were about as bright as the sun, when they accounted for distance, so that was the clincher.

PreMortem: Why is Earth's moon "The Moon" but all other planets moons are named?

Because that would belittle the name of our moon, which is: The Moon.

No.  That was my first thought with the Jupiter photo so I did some digging.  While the tides would be incredible we would be nowhere near the Roche limit for a rocky body orbiting Jupiter.  (I had always thought that it was a fixed number but that's not the case.  There's a term in there, the third root of the relative density of the two bodies.  Since we are a bit over 4x as dense as Jupiter this lets us close to 60% of where the limit would be if both bodies were the same.  Even without that extra margin we are at a bit over twice the limit.)

This is seriously cool. I've had eerie lucid dreams where I've been on another planet or a planet's moon that look just like this. Then again I also had a lucid dream where Jesus' face took up the entire sky....

Me too.

I think the massive amount of radiation trying to kill us would be the thing that spooked me most, aside from that monstrosity blotting out most of the empty sky.

Looks like it. We'd be just outside of the rings. And with earth's mass, we'd be toast. At the very least we'd have volcanic activity like the earth hasn't seen in billions of years.

theorellior: Mikey1969: The only thing I don't understand about this is why Venus is the only one casting light. Obviously if Jupiter were that big and close, it would light things up more than the moon currently does, but the sky is the same illumination in every picture except Venus'. It's like the guy forgot that part in all pof the other pics.

It's probably because Venus reflects just about all the light hitting it. I actually don't think it's bright enough. And you wouldn't see the cloud bands, those are only visible in UV light. It would basically be a blinding disk in the sky of maybe a pale ivory color.

Another thing people don't realize is the Moon is really dark. It's basically the color of an asphalt parking lot. Here's a nice comparison between the Earth and the Moon:

[upload.wikimedia.org image 280x210]

Venus albedo: 0.65

Jupiter albedo: 0.52

If you put a magnifying glass near the ground, you could probably kill a few ants with Jupiter's, eh, 'Jupeshine'.

/TBD until Mythbusters covers it

Gravity makes it possible to drive. Without it you'd just float and spin your wheels in a near vacuum.

2013-04-05 11:38:00 PM
Let's see - Orbiatchanges, tidal changes, season changes, climate changes...even a small one like mercury in place of the moon would have profound effects on our planet.

EvilEgg: UberDave: PreMortem: Why is Earth's moon "The Moon" but all other planets moons are named?

I thought it was "Luna" but we just called it "The Moon".

Mars in orbit would be cool...except for all the coastal floods from extra large tidal changes and earthquakes and climate changes...

Nope it's just the moon, because its ours that makes it special. Just like The Earth and The Sun.

/don't give me this Terra and Sol crap

You're one of those idiots that thinks there's more than one Solar system in the universe, ain't ya?
